After bombarding Philippeville on August 3, Goeben later that day passed HMS Indomitable and Indefatigable; all three ships were cleared for action but their guns were trained fore and aft; their respective nations would not be at war until midnight.
Goeben remained active in the Black Sea for the duration of the war.
Goeben helped to sink the British monitors HMS Raglan and M28, but after the loss of Breslau and hitting three mines herself, Goeben returned to the safety of the straits and was beached near Chanak (now Çannanakale).
