  Once upon a great family - Film - theage.com.au
When Horst Konigsberg first screened the finished version of a new documentary to one of its central characters, he was understandably anxious.
In constructing a family saga, the filmmakers had the example, Konigsberg says, of Mann himself, of his "astounding modern novel", the 1901 Buddenbrooks, a work that tells the story of his forebears, "using the devices of docudrama" and "going into the hidden depths of a family".
Konigsberg says that in his opinion, Elisabeth and Katia are crucial figures in The Manns.

If Konigsberg was not to be trapped in harbour, she needed to sail quickly, and the last day of July found the cruiser putting to sea, soon after, to be 10 miles off shore, when the masthead lookout reported to the bridge he had sighted three ships.
The coal position in Konigsberg was becoming critical, and she made off to rendezous with her supply ship Somali, tagging along with a prize crew onboard was the City of Winchester, plus the German freighters, Ziefen, Goldenfils, and Ostmark.
Konigsberg needed more coal and fresh water, a second meeting with Somali was made, and by the 24th.

Trenches on the Web - Special: Konigsberg. A German East African Raider
Konigsberg was one of a new class of fast well armed cruisers built in the years before the First World War.
Konigsberg turned and headed south for the cape, but within hours suffered a major engine failure and was forced to return to the delta once again.
Severely damaged by the monitors fire Loof scuttled the ship and signalled Berlin "Konigsberg is destroyed but not conquered." Its ghost lived on in the shape of its ten 4 inch guns that reappeared to shell the Allies during the land campaign led by Colonel Von Lettow Vorbeck.

SMS Konigsberg Trapped Official Despatch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
After the whereabouts of the Konigsberg was indicated by the attack on the Pegasus on September 19, a concentration of fast cruisers was arranged by the Admiralty in East African waters, and a thorough and prolonged search by vessels in combination was made.
Part of the crew of the Konigsberg is landed and entrenched on the banks of the river.
Both the entrenchments and the Konigsberg have been bombarded by the Chatham, but owing to the dense palm groves amid which the ship lies, it is not possible to estimate the damage.

The Konigsberg originally had been sent to German East Africa as part of a colonial exhibition to be held in the colony's capital, Dar es Salaam.
By April 1915, with the defeat of von Spee's squadron at the Battle of the Falklands and the destruction of the German raider SMS Emden, the Konigsberg was the only German surface vessel deployed outside the North Sea, and as such, posed a grave threat to British commerce routes.
The exploits of the Konigsberg and her crew in support of German operations in East Africa provide a sterling example of the employment of joint fires in a campaign that was ultimately successful in its aims.

In September 1914, Goliath was dispatched to the East Indies for escort duty against German warships in the area.
In November 1914 she took part in the blockade operation against the SMS Konigsberg in the Rufiji River during which crew-member Commander Henry Peel Ritchie won the Victoria Cross.
Commanded by Captain Thomas Lawrie Shelford, Goliath was part of the Allied fleet during naval operations in the Dardanelles Campaign, supporting the landing at X Beach during the landing at Cape Helles on 25 April 1915.

Interviewed after Brandenn Bremmer's death, Silverman told Konigsberg that the teenager's parents "had contacts with him after he left his body" and that Brandenn's "mission to assist others in this lifetime may have been fulfilled by his death" (Bremmer's organs were donated to several recipients).
My opinion is that Konigsberg took just a very few of his interviews, combined them with his own opinions and wrote the story he wanted - regardless of it's accuracy.
Konigsberg's article is quite consistent with the years and years of other press coverage surrounding the Bremmers and Silverman.

 Königsberg Summary
With her load of general cargo and the first of India's seasonal tea crop, the City of Winchester represented a humble fraction of Great Britain's merchant power.
The order was sent out to abandon ship and the remaining crew scrambled down the side of the ship, bringing with them what wounded they could.
A roar and a blast tore open the cruiser's hull plating and she heeled to port, sinking into the mud of the Rufiji River.

In the German town of Konigsberg, there is a river that used to be spanned by seven bridges.
He made a mathematical diagram of the topography of the Konigsberg bridges on paper, and discovered that it was impossible to cross the bridges only once and end up the same starting point.
Because three of the bridges had three roads protruding from them (as opposed to one or two), the poor Germans had been wasting their afternoons for years.

Interestingly enough, the Konigsbergs captain had outfitted a small craft with the cruisers torpedo tubes, but taking a circuitous route to the British gunboats, it arrived too late to affect the battle.
For the battle with the SMS Konigsberg, boatwrights built up the decks with sandbags, laid down steel plate on the decks to protect them from plunging fire, compass and steering wheel were protected with sandbags and mattresses, the bridge was screened with hammocks.
