  Tursiops Aventures

 SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm Information
SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm (His Majesty's Ship Crown Prince William) was a König class battleship in service with the German Imperial Navy during World War I.
She was originally named SMS Kronprinz, but became the second ship to take the name Kronprinz Wilhelm when the Hilfkreuzer Kronprinz Wilhelm, an auxiliary merchant cruiser, was confiscated by the United States in 1917.
The Kronprinz turned upside down when sinking due to the presence of heavy deck armament. It lies on a 35m deep seabed with the hull upright at about 15-20m deep.Large holes pierce the hull where salvaging for valuable metals took place but it is a popular dive site and the guns are visible near the seabed.

 Scapa Flow, Sept 2002.
The Kronprinz is the shallowest of the three German battleships, the shotline tied to a flat section of her bottom plates in just 15 metres.
In life, the 25,390 ton bulk of the Kronprinz Wilhelm was nearly six hundred feet long and a hundred feet wide - almost as long, and much wider than a Natwest Tower, clad in foot-thick steel armour, home to a full compliment of over 1,100 men.
SMS König, SMS Markgraf and SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm are among the last of their kind, and bobbing on the surface in the sun waiting for our pickup, it has been surprisingly moving to dive on one of them.

 SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm
The massive 25,800 tons König class battleship Kronprinz Wilhelm was built by Germaniaweft in Kiel and launched on 21 February 1914.
In November 1916 she took part in a daring operation to rescue the crew of a stranded u-boat, the commander of which Kapitanleutnant Walther Schwieger had been responsible for one of World War I's most infamous events, the torpedoing of the Lusitania off southern Ireland with the loss of 1,198 men, women and children.
The mighty Kronprinz Wilhelm now lies in 35 metres on water upside down and heeled over onto her starboard side allowing easy access on the port side to her superstructure and allowing sight of her massive guns and turrets, the last guns to have fired at the Battle of Jutland visible today.

These are all from the Konig class of dreadnought, the first in the High Seas Fleet to have their main armourment positioned down the centre line of the ship so that all of the guns could be bought to bear for either port or starboard broadside.
Along with a further sister ship SMS Grosser Kurfhurst these were the most advanced German battleships to fight in the Battle of Jutland.
