SMS Ostfriesland was a Dreadnought-type battleship of the Helgoland class.
She was named after the German region Ostfriesland (East Frisia), which borders the Netherlands and the North Sea.
She was examined extensively in dry dock at the New York Navy Yard returning to sea on the 4 January 1921.

SMS Ostfriesland was a Dreadnought-type (Large and heavily armoured warship) battleship of the Helgoland class.
Ostfriesland was surrendered to the Allies following (A war between the allies (Russia, France, British Empire, Italy, United States, Japan, Rumania, Serbia, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Montenegro) and the central powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria) from 1914 to 1918) World War I.
Although the tests were supposed to be carefully controlled and monitored Mitchell overrode the plans and ensured that his heaviest bombers from Langley Field in (A state in the eastern United States; one of the original 13 colonies; one of the Confederate States in the American Civil War) Virginia, attacked.

The Ostfriesland was 546 feet long and launched in September of 1909 in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
She was heavily armed with 6 large gun turrets, each with two 12-inch barrels, many smaller 5.9-inch guns in armored encasements protruding from the hull, and torpedo tubes beneath the waterline.
The last bombing run was against the Ostfriesland, sending her to the bottom on July 21st with 2000 lb.

Mounting the larger 305mm (12") gun in the same six turret hexagonal layout as SMS Nassau, the SMS Helgoland and her sisters could be distinguished from other German dreadnoughts by her triple funnels, a design throw-back reminiscent of the pre-dreadnoughts SMS Deutschland and SMS Blücher.
Ostfriesland was given to the United States and used in the famous U.S. Army Air Corp bombing tests run by General Billy Mitchell.
Finally realizing that turbines were the way to go, they were incorporated into the next class of German dreadnoughts, SMS Kaiser.

I've just seen your latest photos from the wreck of "Ostfriesland", maybe i can help you identify these brass objects, on the pictures in page II.
I'm very convinced that it's a torpedo tube model "open air", normally they where built-in, but some German WWI warships had them on deck.
Bill Ripley (top) owes Capt. JT $500 for putting him on the Ostfriesland, the result of a bet that he would never be ready to do a dive of this magnitude safely.

In the same fashion, the development of the aircraft carrier by the British towards the end of World War I provided the kindling for a revolution lit by General Billy Mitchell when he successfully sank the former SMS Ostfriesland with an airborne bomb from a plane flown off the deck of a ship.
The aircraft carrier (of which, coincidentally, I’ve just seen two from the air as I type this, the Forrestal and the Saratoga) eventually supplanted the all big-gun battleship – the first of which was HMS Dreadnought – but it took twenty years and the experience of World War II before that happened.

But the vulnerability of capital ships to aircraft was finally demonstrated on 21 July 1921 when a squadron of bombers commanded by General Mitchell sank the ex-German battleship SMS Ostfriesland with aerial bombs.
Germany was banned from possessing a significant air force by the terms of the WWI armistice.
