SN1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A carbocation is formed in the slow step of an SN1 reaction.
Attack of a nucleophile on the carbocation (SN1).
Attack of a base on a H atom on a carbon atom adjacent to the carbocation (E1).

sn1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Molecules undergo an SN1 reaction when the carbon attached to the leaving group is a tertiary carbon(meaning it is attached to three other carbons).
In all SN1 reactions this phenomenon occurs because when the nucleophile comes in to attack the carbocation intermediate(remember the carbocation is flat like a pancake) it is equally as likely that the nucleophile can come in and attack from the top as it is from the bottom.
If the hill is made into a smaller one (as it is when an SN1 reaction is run in a protic solvent) then the reaction is run much faster because it takes a shorter amount of time to cross a smaller hill.

Chapter 4 : SN1 mechanism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
In an SN1 there is loss of the leaving group generates an intermediate carbocation which is then undergoes a rapid reaction with the nucleophile.
In the reactions of alcohols with HX, the reactivity trend of HI > HBr > HCl > HF is not due to the nucleophilicity of the halide ion but the acidity of HX which is involved in generating the leaving group prior to the rate determining step.
In an SN1, the nucleophile attacks the planar carbocation.

 SN1 Beta: Applications Performance
Taking the 16-processor time as the most representative of scaling (since it probably isn't optimal to use all the processors of the SN1 on one job), the SN1 is about 2x as fast as the 300MHz O2K and 3x as fast as the T3E.
SN1 times are on a 32-processor beta machine.
Taking 28-processor times as representative, the SN1 is 1.5x as fast of the O2K-300 (in-line with clock speed) and 2x as fast as the T3E.

 Sn1 Mechanism
A methyl or primary leaving group will not form a carbocation.
Since it goes through a carbocation intermediate, there are possibilities for alkyl and hydrogen rearrangements (HINT: In mechanism problems if you see a change in the carbon skeleton between the reactant and the product, automatically suspect a carbocation intermediate (ie, E1, Sn1) stabilized by an alkyl or hydrogen rearangement).
Base Strength: Base strength is unimportant, since the base is not involved in the rate determining step (the formation of the carbocation).

SN1 ] [ A B ] [ CS1 -SN1 ] = [ RT1 0 ] [-SN1 CS1 ] [ B C ] [ SN1 CS1 ] [ 0 RT2 ].
RT2 may be inaccurate if there is massive cancellation in the determinant A*C-B*B; higher precision or correctly rounded or correctly truncated arithmetic would be needed to compute RT2 accurately in all cases.
Overflow is possible only if RT1 is within a factor of 5 of overflow.

Nucleophilic Substitution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Nucleohphilic Substitution reactions - SN1 and SN2 - are the basis for much of organic chemistry.
Generally strong bases are not good nucleophiles, and weak bases are good nucleophiles but there is not a sharp dividing line.
Keep in mind that carbocations are high-energy species...if it is not necessary to form a carbocation, it probably doesn't.
