SN2 Reaction Mechanism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Transition State: The transition state of the SN2 reaction is a trigonal bipyramid with partial bonds from the carbon atom to both the leaving group and the nucleophile.
Inversion of Configuration: The carbon is tetrahedral at the beginning and end of the reaction, but "umbrellas" in the middle so that the three hydrogen atoms which were pointing to the nucleophile end up pointing to the leaving group.
The left side of the reaction energy diagram, where the energy is the lowest, represents chloride ion and methylbromide prior to the reaction beginning.

 Chapter 8 : SN2 mechanism
In an SN2 there is simultaneous formation of the carbon-nucleophile bond and breaking of the carbon-leaving group bond, hence the reaction proceeds via a TS in which the central C is partially bonded to five groups.
Use the lower row of space filling models (which are great for seeing steric effects) to rotate the molecules to look at the electrophilic C center from the side opposite to the leaving group (which is where the nucleophile attacks from) to see how much of it the electrophilic center you can see.
When the nucleophile attacks in an SN2 it is on the opposite side to the position of the leaving group.

 Sn2 Standards
However, most Sn2 modelers prefer HOn3 gauge, because the components (trucks, wheels, couplers, locos,....) are closer to the size of S narrow gauge than N scale components.
Based on the size of the HOn3 coupler, which is about the same size as true Sn2 couplers, the height of the car underbody, and the height of the coupler, we had to make a choice.
Sn2 seems to be adopting a version of Free-Mo for Sn2.

SNTWO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Molecules undergo an SN2 reaction when the carbon attached to the leaving group is a primary carbon(meaning it is attached to only one other carbon) or if it has only hydrogen's attached to it.
When running an SN2 reaction it is important to choose the proper solvent.
Now, remember that in SN2 reactions that the rate of the reaction depends on two things: how quickly the nucleophile can come in and attack and how quickly the leaving group can leave.

Sn2 discussions could be heard all around the show.
Even with the support of manufacturers, Sn2 was primarily for dabblers through the 80's and early 90's.
Conversions - One benefit of Sn2 is the ability to use models from HO and O. On this page you will see how several modelers have converted models from other scales for use in Sn2.

 SN2 Reactions
We can say from these studies that the SN2 reaction is first order in respect to the organic substrate (alkyl halide in this discussion) and first order in respect to the concentration of the nucleophile.
Studies have shown that rates of SN2 reactions are enhanced when Polar Aprotic solvents are used.
Increasing the concentration of the nucleophile will enhance the rate of an SN2 reaction since kinetically the reaction is first order in respect to the nucleophile concentration.

The main point here is that the SN2 reaction is stereospecific, but the SN1 reaction gives a mixture of products when that is possible.
Read "SN1 conditions" as "heat." And "SN2 conditions" as "DMSO or DMF for solvent" 10.8 Benzylic Halides, Allylic Halides, Vinylic Halides, and Aryl Halides.
So the "reactivity order" for SN2 reactions in Table 10.5 should really just be "methyl > 1o > 2o." -Tertiary alkyl halides (R3CX) invariably react via the SN1 reaction or not at all.

Nucleophilic Substitution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Nucleohphilic Substitution reactions - SN1 and SN2 - are the basis for much of organic chemistry.
BUT, depending on the conditions, they can also act as nucleophiles - most often in SN2 reactions when the leaving group is in a primary position and is not sterically hindered.
The leaving group leaves and the nucleophile attaches at the same time, the reaction is said to be "concerted." SN2 reactions occur when the nucleophile can easilly approach the carbon, and SN2 reactions fail to occur when there is a lot of crowding around that carbon.
