SNCF Chief Executive Anne-Marie Idrac said Wednesday that Bombardier had been chosen over Alstom and German rival Siemens AG for its "higher quality of service," following a rigorous selection process in which some 5,000 criteria were considered.
SNCF said it placed a firm $2.33 billion order with Bombardier for 172 trains, due to enter service on suburban Paris lines in 2009-2015, and an option for a further 200 that could more than double the final bill.
The French company has previously complained that it was excluded from bidding for a deal to supply equipment for the Montreal subway, eventually awarded to Bombardier at a price Alstom considers it could easily have beaten.

High-speed rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Later high speed rail lines, such as the LGV Atlantique, the LGV Est, and most high speed lines in Germany, were designed as feeder routes branching into conventional rail lines, serving a larger number of medium-sized cities.
The recognition of the interrelationship between land development and the high-speed rail network led, in 1970, to the enactment of a law for the construction of a nationwide Shinkansen railway network.
By building a new rail infrastructure with 20th century engineering, including elimination of constrictions such as roadway at-grade (level) crossings, frequent stops, a succession of curves and reverse curves, and not sharing the right-of-way with freight or slower passenger trains, higher speeds (250–300 km/h) are maintained.
