Topic: SNECMA M88

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

  Rafale
The project was originally meant to replace England's and Germany's F-4 Phantom in 1977, but because of divergences on some specifications (France wanted SNECMA M88 reactors, England wanted Rolls-Royce RB199 and Germany wanted to use General Electric F404 motors), Dassault decides to withdraw from this project and to design its own multirole fighter.
The original project conducted to the Eurofighter Typhoon, whose perfomances are often considered lesser especially in ground attack.
Motorization: Snecma M88, postcombustion thrust: 7 500 kgp.

 Upgrades
Snecma developed a variant known as the -P20 with an A/B rating of 98 kiloNewton.
The M88 has an extremely high TET and M53 turbine blades made of the same material could extend the life of the turbine considerably or allow the M53 to run considerably hotter which could reduce the fuel consumption.
Snecma had previously suggested that full scale development could begin in early 2002.

Eurojet EJ200 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SNECMA were in the original 1984 consortium, but dropped out when France decided to build their own smaller fighter, the Dassault Rafale, supposedly to improve export opportunities.
France went on to develop, fairly rapidly, the SNECMA M88, which has a similar cycle to that of the EJ200, but is smaller and lower in thrust.
The technology of the EJ200 makes it both smaller and simpler in layout than current powerplants while giving it lower fuel consumption and an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio - all vital factors in enhancing the multi-mission performance and effectiveness of combat aircraft.

Snecma, Rolls-Royce Deutschland Likely to Form Partership
Snecma Group chairman Jean-Paul Bechat told Show News it is far too early to talk about any plans for Turbomeca.
Snecma's partners -- MTU of Germany, FiatAvio of Italy, ITP of Spain and associate partner Techspace Aero from Belgium-will all be involved in the compromise with the Rolls-Royce consortium.
He added that Snecma and Rolls-Royce have long been partners on commercial engines, with Snecma subsidiary Hispano-Suiza providing power transmissions and accessory gearboxes for a wide range of engines, including the BR700 series, and the Trent 500, 700 and 800.

 The Dassault Rafale
Dassault was authorized to begin full development of an ACX demonstrator in early 1983, naming the machine the "Rafale (Squall)", while SNECMA began work on a new afterburning turbofan for the ACX, the "M88".
The Rafale is powered by two SNECMA M88-2 turbofans, with 50 kN (5,100 kgp / 11,240 lbf) dry thrust and 75 kN (7,645 kgp / 16,860 lbf) afterburning thrust each, and fitted with "full authority digital engine controls (FADEC)".
SNECMA is working on an uprated M88-3, which would have 90 kN (9,175 kgp / 20,233 lbf) afterburning thrust.

French co offers blades, systems for LCA engine
FOLLOWING Wednesday's announcement that the Ministry of Defence is not averse to looking for co-operation in the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project, the French company, Snecma Moteurs, has been holding talks with the departments of the Ministry of Defence on working together on the Kaveri engine programme of the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).
Although Snecma has an M88 engine that can be wholly integrated into LCA, with the Indian agencies still keen on developing an indigenous engine, Snecma has offered to help with the Kaveri engine programme.
When queried about criticism from some defence sources that the Snecma M88 engine would require a lot of development time before integration into LCA, Mr Bechat said, ``The M88 is being used in the Rafale, a multi-role fighter.

With the APU already running, the two Snecma M88-2 engines can be started in close to 1 min.
The Rafale is equipped with a single throttle for both engines, but the front seat has two small auxiliary throttles that can be engaged if the pilot needs to operate only one engine for any reason.
The Snecma M88-2 engines are in the 7.5-ton class for power, but for the export version of the Rafale, Dassault is considering installing 9.0-ton-class engines.

Snecma Moteurs designed the state-of-the-art M88 twin-spool turbofan to power the Rafale multirole fighter, in both air force and carrier-borne versions.
The M88 represents the third generation of French fighter engines, after the acclaimed Atar and M53.
Because of the M88-2's adaptable, open control system, Snecma Moteurs is also considering a "combat rating" option, which temporarily increases thrust during takeoff and initial climb - a capability which is very helpful during when fighters have to scramble, for instance.

FLUG REVUE February 2001: New fighter engines
For engines such as the Eurojet EJ200, the Snecma M88 or the Pratt & Whitney F119 this means that the design is primarily geared towards deployment in the air-to-air role.
Rapid take-off and powerful performance during intercept missions are just as important here as trouble-free operation, including at high angles of attack or high angles of sideslip.
Since it is inconceivable that a future fighter aircraft and its engines should be developed other than in a collaborative European programme, it is appropriate that the research work should be co-ordinated among the companies.

Dassault, Thales, and Snecma have no doubts that the Rafale embodies world-class technology, and its failure to secure export orders is clearly a source of frustration, as evidenced by Dassault's attempt to file a lawsuit against the Korean government following Korea's choice of the F-15.
