System-on-a-chip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
System-on-a-chip (SoC or SOC) is an idea of integrating all components of a computer or other electronic system into a single chip.
A key step in the SoC design flow is emulation: the hardware is mapped onto an emulation platform based on a FPGA that then mimics the behavior of the SoC, and the software modules are loaded into the memory of the emulation platform.
After emulation the hardware of the SoC follows the place and route phase of the design of an integrated circuit before it is fabricated.

 SOC User Guide
The 2000 SOC is the result of a cooperative effort of all federal agencies that use occupational classification systems to maximize the usefulness of occupational information collected by the Federal Government.
The first two digits of the SOC code represent the major group; the third digit represents the minor group; the fourth and fifth digits represent the broad occupation; and the detailed occupation is represented by the sixth digit.
There are four hierarchical levels in the SOC to enable users to choose a level of detail corresponding to their interest and ability to collect data on different occupations.

SoC design might be expanding the hardware and software interface, but the hardware design decisions defining this space are still not a bad place to begin high-level architectural definition.
SoCs incorporating multiple processors will often be asymmetric, whereby processors are dedicated to specific services once and for all; often the NUMA memory model is used to speed up each processor, since interaction between processors is only occasional.
In general, SoCs can be designed as custom ASICs using soft cores such as the Tensilica Configurable SoC, or using a combination of hard cores such as the PowerPC 405 found in the Virtex-II Pro 4 Reconfigurable SoC and custom FPGA surrounding logic.

Richman discussed the efforts SOC has made to ensure the safety of its employees after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and precautions taken to protect workers on Federal mailroom contracts in the D.C.-metropolitan area in light of anthrax concerns.
Richman also explained how SOC was adapting balanced scorecards, one of the most highly-touted management tools of the past decade, for use in the nonprofit sector.
The balanced scorecard developed by SOC over the past year allows SOC to determine and track the strategies that will help it reach its primary objective of providing people with disabilities and their families with "self-improvement, advancement, acceptance, and monetary reward in a safe environment" via training, employment, and career-development opportunities.

The SoCs being designed in 2005 and beyond will no doubt involve multiple cores, interconnections such as the IBM CoreConnect™, and specialized I/O for the application the system is designed to support.
The idea of the SoC is to design an ASIC with the minimum pin and part count necessary for an application, and with significant throughput.
SoCs are typically designed as configurable ASICs with significant reuse of existing intellectual property (IP), which speeds time-to-market.
