SPH MediaWorks brought 2 alternative free-to-air terrestrial television channels to the audience in Singapore, in 2001.
In June 2000, Mr Lee Cheok Yew was appointed as the CEO of SPH Mediaworks Ltd. Between August and November 2000, Mr Man Shu Sum and some of the MediaCorp artistes joined from SPH Mediaworks, the former as Chief Operating Officer of MediaCorp.

SPH MediaWorks' Channel i was a Singaporean English-language television channel which began broadcasts in 20 May 2001.
As a result of the media merger with MediaCorp, the channel ceased transmission on 1 January 2005, as MediaCorp and SPH deemed that the channel had no commercial viability because the English television market was so small.
In 2001, SPH MediaWorks downsized and restructured the channel, and trimmed 73 employees from its workforce of 380.

SPH was supposed to get a broadcasting licence after the government decided to deregulate the domestic media industry last year, allowing state-owned TV company MediaCorp to venture into newspaper publishing and in turn, for the pro-government SPH group to go into broadcasting.
Industry sources said it was unclear why the broadcasting authority was sitting on the licence to SPH but there was speculation the authority may be showing extra caution in granting a TV licence to a new operator in an election year.

In a span of a week, SPH floated its Internet portal, unveiled plans for two new dailies, and formed a broadcasting unit after the government shook up the industry by vowing to issue new print and broadcasting licences.
SPH posted net profits of S$201.59 million in the six months to February, up 44 per cent from a year ago on the back of an improving economy and expected better performance this year.

Anyhow, this spells the end for any possible media competition in the next 10-20 years in Singapore as if a profitable firm like SPH has decided that it can't hold out the competition, I doubt any other company would dare to or have the capital to try induce any competition into the scene...
SPH ambitiously demanding print journalist to multi-task and take on a variety of roles was the very reason why I chose to take up an SPH scholarship as I liked the challenge and the opportunities that came with it.

Touted as Singapore's "first integrated print and cyberspace news magazine," Project Eyeball, owned by the Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH), was barely two years old, but Tan was already drawing a salary that was six times his pay as a writer in Manila, and with a housing allowance to boot.
Tan even says that because he was one of the handful who put the magazine to bed nightly, he felt like he was participating in a surreal tragicomedy as he walked out of the newsroom to go home that gloomy evening last June and literally bid Project Eyeball goodbye.

The clear rival for SPH is MediaCorp, which does television as well.
