  Word Spy - spim
Most spim is generated by using "bots," according to IM providers and industry watchers.
Felman says bulk-message software has clever ways to get around built-in controls in messenger services by rotating the names used to broadcast pitches, or by generating new ones when old ones are killed.
Spim is also sometimes called instant spam or IM marketing.

Spam being rapidly outpaced by 'spim' - 26 March 2004 - New Scientist
The volume of so-called "spim" is set triple in 2004, according to a new report from the Radicati Group, a technology market research firm in Palo Alto, California.
This is a mere trickle compared to the 35 billion spams expected, but the researchers warn that spim is growing at about three times the rate of spam, as spammers adapt their toolkit to exploit a rapidly rising number of new instant messaging (IM) users.
Spim is more insidious than spam because messages pop up automatically when a user is logged in, making them harder to ignore.

Using SPIM with Modern Compiler Implementation   (Site not responding. Last check: )
SPIM is a simulator for the MIPS instruction set.
The SPIM simulator allows MIPS assembly-language to be assembled and run on a Pentium PC running Microsoft Windows (or on a Unix workstation of almost any type).
SPIM is available from the University of Wisconsin; it can be freely used and distributed for non-commercial purposes.

 XEP-0159: Spim-Blocking Control
Spim could be generated by XMPP clients connected to legitimate servers or by XMPP servers with virtual clients, where the malicious entities are hosted on networks of "zombie" machines.
Spim is defined here as any type of unsolicited XMPP stanza sent by a "robot" and delivered to a human, including messages and subscription requests.
The various spim recognition procedures that may be employed by the server are beyond the scope of this document.

Think Spam Is Tough? Try Fighting Spim
So far the issue of spim has not been widely recognized as a problem, but as the recent outbreak of the 'Osama Found' AOL Instant Messenger worm revealed, spim is a threat that corporate IM users should be thinking about now, not in the future.
In the case of indiscriminate spim — that in which the user does not recognize the sender — the reader may not click on a link embedded in the message, but they will still have stopped what they are doing to read the IM message.
If the spim message is received from a recognized user who has been infected by a spim worm, such as Osama found, the click-through rate for links embedded in the message is very high, as the recipient invariably trusts any message that is received from a user in their buddy list.

Since SPIM provides optical sectioning even with lenses that have a large working distance and a relatively low numerical aperture it is especially well suited for the investigation of large samples to study features (such as gene expression patterns) that require high resolution while being extended over a large volume.

 SPIM
SPIM S20 is a simulator that runs programs for the MIPS R2000/R3000 RISC computers.
SPIM is a self-contained system for running these programs and contains a debugger and interface to a few operating system services.
For example, SPIM has an X-window interface that is better than most debuggers for the actual machines.

 Introduction to SPIM
SPIM was written by James R. Larus, then at the Computer Sciences Department of University of Wisconsin, Madison (larus@cs.wisc.edu).
SPIM is very portable, which allows students to generate code for a simple, clean, orthogonal computer.
SPIM implements almost the entire MIPS assembler-extended instruction set for the R2000/R3000 (with the exception of some complex floating-point comparison instructions and direct manipulation of the memory system page tables).

 SPIM S20: A MIPS R2000 Simulator

`` the performance at none of the cost''

Although SPIM faithfully simulates the MIPS computer, it is a simulator and certain things are not identical to the actual computer.
SPIM does not simulate caches or memory latency, nor does it accurate reflect the delays for floating point operations or multiplies and divides.
SPIM does not implement all of these registers, since they are not of much use in a simulator or are part of the memory system, which is not implemented.

 Getting started on SPIM
The version of SPIM that we will be using is xspim, which means, you will need to be running the X Window System before you can run xspim.
Spim parses the assembly file and checks for error during load, so this is a good time to see if our program has no syntax and typo errors.
The spim console is also the place where output messages are displayed, so if we use a syscall that prints out a message or some data it will appear in the spim console window.

February 24, 2005, 8:52 AM A number of news reports, helped along by media-savvy prosecutors, are positioning the recent arrest of teenage spammer Tony Greco as a significant milestone in "spim," or instant message spam.
IM spam has been around for roughly seven years, and all along "experts" have predicted spim is about to rage out of control.
