The SPLA was formed in 1983, and has since fought against the governments of Nimeiri, Sadiq al-Mahdi and President Omar Bashir.
A number of former SPLA commanders broke with Garang in the early 1990s and eventually signed a separate peace agreement with Khartoum in April 1997.
For several years he was the number two in the SPLA led by John Garang, but the two men - who belong to different branches of the Dinka group - fell out in 1987.

At the time of writing of this report, SPLA forces were also threatening the very strategic railway junction town of Wau in Bahr-El-Ghazal and the hydro-electric power station at the dam near Damazin on the Blue Nile.
Against all odds, the SPLA in the Nuba have succeeded in repulsing six of the eight massive military columns recently sent into the Nuba Mountains.
Although the SPLA never discusses its military strategy publicly, one can discern a general strategy of isolating the Southern capital of Juba and preventing any reinforcements or supplies from reaching the beleaguered troops of the NIF garrison in Southern Sudan's largest town.

Peace through development in the Sudan - SPLA document
As the military wing of the Movement, the SPLA is under the political and civil authority of the SPLM, and becomes transformed into the army of the State of New Sudan after the war.
SPLM is a political movement (not a political party) that accommodates a wide spectrum of political inclinations and shades of opinion, all of which believe in and strive for, the creation of a new Sudan.
The military instrument of the Movement, the SPLA, is an army of volunteers operating under the political direction of the SPLM.

As this paper argues, SPLA cannot be considered as the army of the South that would live in peace with civilians without its radical change of the ideology and orientation that was inculcated by late John Garang.
The organisation presented by the SPLA as its ‘humanitarian’ wing, the Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Association (SRRA), has been revealed to be both totally controlled by the SPLA and to have been closely identified with the systematic theft and diversion of emergency food aid intended for famine victims and refugees.
Throughout OLS the SRRA often gave the impression that it was the procurement department for the SPLA, as least as far as food and medicines are concerned...Its representation of itself as the humanitarian wing of the SPLM was undermined by its subordination to the SPLA”.

In Equatoria…the SPLA was perceived as a Nilotic or Dinka movement whose objective was to reverse the division of the southern region, and to destroy the ‘Equatoria Region’ and impose the Dinka hegemony.
As the clear intention of the SPLA was, and continues to be, to abduct young and very young children, well under the age of 18 years, without the consent of their parents, John Garang and the SPLA are guilty of slavery and slavery-like practices.
It is unacceptable that the SPLA is being encouraged by the United States government, as well as governments of Uganda, Eritrea and Ethiopia, to continue its campaign of violence in the face of clear internal attempts within Sudan to reach a negotiated resolution of the Sudanese civil war.

SPLA Responsible for Sudan's Lost Boys
This systematic abuse of children, and the disappearance of thousands of other Sudanese children while in SPLA control has seemingly been ignored at the same time as Sudan is being pressed to account for the alleged abduction of Ugandan children by the Lord's Resistance Army rebel movement in Uganda.
The SPLA's purposeful abduction and isolation of southern Sudanese children can be seen as a corrupted and less sophisticated version of the Nazi use of youngsters for political and military ends, the result of which was a grouping of child soldiers within the SPLA known as the "Red Army".
SPLA national executive member Dr Peter Nyaba has actually criticised the fact that no-one within the SPLA leadership was held accountable for such deaths.
