.sp The conclusion is that there is no significant intrinsic difference in the complexity of implementation of the two approaches, and a straightforward TTL implementation of a ring network should require about the same amount of hardware as an equivalent function contention-controlled broadcast net operating at the same speed.
In a contention network, at the beginning of each packet transmission there is a period when there is a risk of collision: this period is proportional to the length of the transmission medium, since the packet is exposed to collision until its first bit propagates to the farthest transceiver.
.sp This paper examines briefly nine technical differences between the contention-controlled broadcast approach and the ring, and argues that it is interesting to pursue the ring technology.

 draft-ietf-ppvpn-framework-06.txt
If the carrier of carriers SP does not want to grant the sub-carrier open access to all of the managed objects within their PEs or P routers, it is necessary for devices to provide network operators with secure and scalable per-VPN network management access to their devices.
Route Reflectors: An SP-owned network element that is used to distribute BGP routes to the SP's BGP-enabled routers; usually used to allow a larger number of routers to receive BGP routes within an SP network than would otherwise be possible by using a full mesh of BGP-enabled routers.
This adds work to the SP network, and limits the protocols which can be supported by the VPN.

These network performance tuning settings have been selected by IBM for a typical SP environment and replace the default AIX settings (which are not appropriate for most SP environments).
There are three methods for changing the network performance tunables on the nodes after you have installed your SP system.
To make the network options permanent, change the tuning.cust file on the node's boot/install server, which in some cases may be the control workstation.

 rfc4031.txt
Since an SP has control over the provisioning of resources and configuration of parameters in at least the PE and P devices and, in some cases, in the CE device as well, the onus is on the SP to provide either managed QoS access service, or edge-to-edge QoS service, as defined in section 4.3.2.
An SP SHOULD be able to deploy protection and restoration mechanisms within his or her backbone infrastructure to increase reliability and fault tolerance of the VPN service offering.
Such an SP should be able to resell VPN service to his or her VPN customers independently of the DSCP mapping solution supported by the carrier's carrier SP.

RFC 2917 (rfc2917) - A Core MPLS IP VPN Architecture
One indicator of the VPN size is the number of SPEDs in the SP's network that have connections to CPE routers in that VPN.
Obviously, the SP has to guarantee that the PNA and the PNA's designees are the only ones who have access to the VRs on the SPEDs the private network has connections to.
To be specific, the SP controls physical switches or routers, physical links, logical layer 2 connections (such as DLCI in Frame Relay and VPI/VCI in ATM) and LSPs (and their assignment to specific VPNs).

 Introduction
Nevertheless, the SP's network latency is 2 to 4 times higher than that of older MPPs such as the TMC CM-5 or Meiko CS-2, mainly due to overheads in the communication software and in the network interface architecture.
SP AM bulk transfers achieve an asymptotic network bandwidth of 34.3 MBytes/s which is comparable with the 34.6 MBytes/s measured using IBM MPL.
The first part of this paper (Section 2) describes the IBM SP implementation of AM (SP AM) which is layered directly on top of the SP's network adapter (TB2) and which does not use any IBM software on the Power2 processor.

 SP System Topology Considerations
When tuning of the SP, since it is essentially a network connected set of nodes, the underlying topology of the networks used in the complete configuration are important.
In a system that consists of just the SP Ethernet and the SP switch, you may not be able to optimize tuning settings so that you achieve peak performance on both networks.
The routing through the SP Ethernet can be complicated because of the limitation on the number of simultaneous network installs per Ethernet subnet.

Some examples are: (i) manual configuration by a trusted party, directly on the considered network element; (ii) via a management protocol running over an IPsec-secured connection between the SP's management center and the considered network element; (iii) via a management protocol that has its own implicit security mechanisms.
Once the SP's VPN database has been updated, this will trigger the distribution of this updated information from the SP's VPN database to all the appropriate CE devices by the management system, using the management protocol over the secured control connections.
Such connectivity may be achieved via the SP's PE router that provides the VPN connectivity or some other router (of the same or another SP).
