SRW/U with OAI: Expected and Unexpected Synergies
In SRW version 1.1 a mandatory 'version' parameter was added to the operations and the version number was removed from the namespace for the SOAP [11] binding.
SRW's solution to this is to have a namespace that will not change for the lifetime of the protocol, and to put the version information as a mandatory parameter in both the request and the response.
SRW and OAI themselves could benefit from similar such registries, rather than just being the protocols used to power them, especially in the realm of SRW's context sets where duplication of indexes across different context sets may lead to a decrease in the ease of interoperability in the future.

SRW is the "Search/Retrieve Web Service" protocol, which aims to integrate access to various networked resources, and to promote interoperability between distributed databases, by providing a common utilization framework.
SRW is a web-service-based protocol whose underpinnings are formed by bringing together more than 20 years experience from the collective implementers of the Z39.50 Information Retrieval protocol with recent developments in the web technologies arena.
SRW features both SOAP and URL-based access mechanisms to provide for a wide variety of possible clients ranging from Microsoft's.Net initiative to simple Javascript and XSLT transformations.

SRW and SRU are intended to define a standard form for Internet search queries as well as the structure of the responses.
SRW and SRU are "brother and sister" standardised Web Service-based protocols for accomplishing the task of querying Internet-accessible databases and returning search results.
If index providers were to expose their services via SRW and/or SRU, then the content of the 'hidden Web' would become more accessible and there would be less of a need to constantly re-invent the interfaces to these indexes.

SRW was announced as an alternative to Z39.50 under the umbrella of the Z39.50 international Next Generation [ZiNG] Two access mechanisms were proposed: 1) SRW (Search and Retrieve via the Web), based on the use of SOAP
The SRW approach uses SOAP as an extra protocol layer, the main difference in the protocol being that a search is defined using XML.
We anticipate that SRW and SRU will gradually replace Z39.50, and we hope the Z39.50-SRU gateway will stimulate the acceptance SRU/SRW, as it allows existing Z39.50 services to be made available as SRU services without any change.
