Tautog sighted a freighter on 22 January in the Banda Sea, and three of the submarine's torpedoes sent her to the bottom.
Tautog 's assignments for her 10th war patrol took her to the cold waters of the northern Pacific near the Kurils, from Paramushiro south to the main islands of Japan and the northeast coast of Hokkaido.
Tautog arrived at Portsmouth, N.H., on 18 November and was decommissioned on 8 December 1945.

USS Tautog (SS-199), a Tambor-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tautog, a small edible sport fish, also called flfish or oysterfish, found on the Atlantic coast of the United States.
Tautog's assignments for her tenth war patrol took her to the cold waters of the northern Pacific near the Kuril Islands, from Paramushiro south to the main islands of Japan and the north east coast of Hokkaido.
Tautog was back in Pearl Harbor in early December and, on 17 December, she began her 13th and last war patrol.

In May 1941 Tautog was sent to the Pacific for basing at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and was present there on 7 December 1941, when the devastating Japanese surprise attack opened the Pacific War.
In 1947 Tautog went to the Great Lakes, where she was employed as a stationary Naval Reserve training submarine at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for nearly twelve years.
She is painted fl, with large numerals ("199") on her conning tower side, and is fitted with a 3"/50 deck gun aft.

The keel for the second TAUTOG was laid 27 January 1964 at Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation, Pascagoula, Mississippi.
TAUTOG again departed for WESTPAC in 1972, receiving the Navy Unit Commendation for operations conducted during that deployment.
The Tautog, commonly called Blackfish, belongs to the family of fish called Wrasse and is found along the Northern Atlantic coast.

They were the last phase of development of US subs prior to the introduction of the Gato class in 1942.
These two classes of submarines shouldered the bulk of the combat duties during the early stages of the war, with the USS Tautog holding the scoring record in the category of "number of ships sunk" by any U.S. submarine.

Assigned to the Pacific Fleet in 1940, Tautog was at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941.
Returning to the West Coast for a refit in June, after one patrol in the Caroline Islands she began a series of four patrols in Japanese home waters during which she ranged between Hokkaido in the south and the Kurile Islands in the north.
Tautog's thirteenth patrol (between December 1944 and January 1945) took her into the South China Sea.

On 25 May, the Tautog sank the cargo ship Shoka Maru before heading back to begin another war patrol, during which she sank the Ohio Maru on 6 August 1942.
U.S. The Tautog suffered moderate damage during a depth charge attack on 11 November, causing her to head to Freemantle, Australia, for repairs.
On Christmas day 1942, the Tautog sank a Japanese freighter, and on 9 January 1943 she attacked and damaged a Natori-class cruiser but was driven off by the enemy warship's defensive fire.

In 1942 alone Grayback, along with four other U.S. submarines (USS Gudgeon (SS 211), USS Tautog (SS 199), USS Triton (SS 201) and USS Seadragon (SS 194)) acting independently, combined to sink 81 enemy ships from Pearl Harbor to the East China Sea.
In 1943 Cmdr. Moore assumed command of Grayback and joined two other subs (USS Shad (SS 235) and USS Cero (SS 225)) to form the first rendition of Capt. Charles "Swede" Momsen's 'wolf-pack' of Submarine Squadron Two.
Generally, submarine skippers objected to "wolf-packing." They felt operating independently was more efficient and they all lived in dread that someday this method would sooner or later result in the sinking of one friendly submarine by another.

Pampanito currently carries a 4 inch 50 caliber deck gun.
This gun is the actual gun carried by the USS Tautog (SS-199), the highest scoring U.S. submarine of World War II.
Deck guns were primarily used for surfaced attacks against small targets that did not justify expending a torpedo.
