USS Pogy (SS-266), a Gato-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the pogy, a trout found in Lake Tahoe, California.
Pogy temporarily decommissioned 1 February for a Mississippi cruise on a river barge to New Orleans, LA, and recommissioned upon her arrival 12 February.
Pogy sighted an aircraft ferry steaming for Truk, and sank the 7,497 ton Mongamigawa Maru and her valuable cargo 1 August.

ahhhh, i had no idea that "pogy" meant being on unemployment in Canada.
The USS POGY (SS-266) was a WWII-era submarine built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin which is about an hour and a half north of where i live.
The number 366 is the hull number of the USS HAWKBILL (SS-366), another sub built in Manitowoc.

The author, Claude M. Pearson, Captain USNR (Rtd.) explains that Piratefish is a sequel to his first novel Gunfish and involves officers and crew members five years later serving on a new generation of submarines.
Pearson as a Naval Reserve Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1944 and 1945 made four war patrols on the U.S.S. Pogy (SS 266) where he served as Torpedo and Gunnery Officer and was twice awarded the Submarine Combat Insignia.
He retired from practice in 1991 and he writes and lives in Tacoma, Washington.
