SS American Victory was named after American University in Washington, D.C., to honor the school's contributions to war training and weapons research during both WW I and WW II.
Between 1946 and 1966, American Victory was chartered to commercial shipping firms, between a two year layup in the Hudson River Reserve Fleet and eight years in the Sabine River Reserve Fleet.
American Victory was deactivated again in late 1969, and placed in the James River Reserve Fleet.

The American Victory's Shakedown Cruise was sponsored through the generosity of Maritrans, Inc., the Tampa-based petroleum carrier.
The crew of the SS City of Rayville, one of the first American merchant cargo vessels lost during World War II was honored, as were the crews of the three Victory Class ships sunk in 1945 during kamikaze attacks off Okinawa, the SS Canada Victory, the SS Logan Victory and the SS Hobbs Victory.
The American Victory is one of only a handful of the more than 2,700 American-flagged merchant cargo vessels built between 1939 and 1946 that are still afloat.

The Southeast Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers held it's April meeting aboard the SS AMERICAN VICTORY, moored alongside the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Florida.
Commander Harden presented a paper describing the Victory Class vessels from the first discernment of need to the final demise of the class as operational ships, to the efforts to salvage three ships as memorials.
When all was ready, the "AMERICAN VICTORY" left the JRRF on September 9, 1999, and after a somewhat protracted voyage, she arrived in Tampa on September 16, 1999.
