The SS Division (motorised) Wiking was a German Waffen SS division recruited from foreign volunteers.
After the success of the Infanterie-Regiment (mot.) Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, SS-Verfügungstruppen-Division and the SS-Division Totenkopf during the early war campaigns in Poland and the West, it was decided to expand the number of Waffen SS divisions.
The division finally captured Malgobek on 6 October, however the objective of seizing the capital and opening a road to the Caspian was unreachable.

The division fought several rear-guard actions during the retreat through France and Belgium, and in early September 1944, the exhausted unit was pulled out of the line for rest and refit near the Dutch city of Arnhem.
The division, along with the majority of the SS Panzer units available, was to take part in Operation Frühlingserwachen (Spring Awakening), the offensive near Lake Balaton aimed at securing the Hungarian oilfields and relieving the forces trapped in Budapest by the Soviets.
Hohenstaufen was involved in the ferocious fighting to escape the Soviet encirclement, and on 6 April the tattered remnants of the division emerged from the trap.

As one reviewer stated, this is a poor translation of the unit histories of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions.
Although this book is probably the definitive account of the II SS Panzerkorps in World War II, it uses dry prose and too many sub-units references that make the reader occasionaly to lose his patience.
It is very useful tool for someone who wants to compile a study in depth of the two SS divisions, but I would not recommend it to the casual reader.

The 9th SS Panzer Division was ordered into action against the Allied Landings at Normandy on the 16th of June following a special directive from Hitler.
The situation begain with the 9th SS being given an area North and Northeast of Arnhem to camp durring their period of refitting and rehabilitation.
Although the division had been hidden well in the wooded area, there were some in the British intellegance who were a bit concerned that the division might be in the area around Arnhem, the target for the next big Allied operation.

This division was chosen because not only was it Germany's elite fighting formation but it also fought on every major front in W.W.II (excluding North Africa) making participation of this unit at any W.W. II event historically acceptable.
Idea to form this unit came in 2002 when it was realised that with all the Waffen SS divisions that exist, no one has reenacted the Galicia division.

As being assigned to the HJ division that was being formed at the same time I suggest that he probably was in duty with the HJ helping in his formation and training.
Erich Olboeter is listed as commander of 5.(schw.) Kp, SS A.A. 1 on January 1.943 and later was in charge of SS A.A. 12, first date I found November 17th, 1.943 when he received a batch of volunteers to this unit.
