The SS General von Steuben (formerly called the München (after Munich), but renamed in 1938) was a German luxury passenger ship which was turned into an armored transport ship in World War II.
Around 4,500 people died in the sinking of the General von Steuben; there were 659 survivors.
The ship was named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian soldier who helped the Continental forces during the American Revolutionary War.

Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben was born sometime in 1730 in Magdeburg in the Electorate of Brandenburg.
Von Steuben became a citizen of the United States in 1783 and, following retirement from the army, resided in New York where he became one of the most popular figures in the city until his death in 1794.
Von Steuben coaled at Bermuda on 12 and 13 March and arrived at Norfolk on the 16th.

The SS General von Steuben (formerly called München, but renamed in 1938) was a German passenger ship which was used as a hospital ship in World War II.
On 9th February 1945 the 14,600-ton liner left port in Pillau with 2000 wounded, 230 nurses, 30 doctors and about 1000 civil refugees.
After the explosions, the ship started to burn and sank after 7 minutes.
