Laconia made her maiden voyage on the 25th of May 1922, Southampton-New York and apart from alternating occasionally to Boston, commencing voyages in Hamburg and summer cruising between 1930 to 1939 her career had been incident free and pretty uneventful.
Hartenstein first spotted the smoke from Laconia at 0937 hrs on the twelfth and immediately gave the order to proceed at best possible speed, about sixteen knots, in her direction, by 1300 hrs he was able to positively identify her as a liner but not sure whether she was an AMC or a troop transport.
As they neared Laconia at 1800 hrs they were able to determine that she was sailing a zigzag course on a heading of 310°, an hour later Hartenstein fixed his position at 5.0° south, 11.08° west.

It was a much-played record, if I may use the expression, and I was now anxious to state to the commanders of the submarines a reason which would exclude all discretion and all independent decisions of the commanders.
My staff, which is here, has told me that it referred to the four radio messages which I had sent; because before the Laconia case no statement on this subject had been made.
It was also self-evident that at the discussions of the military situation only purely military matters were discussed, that is, no problems of domestic policy, of the SD, or the SS, unless it was a question of SS divisions in military service under one of the army commanders.

Cruise Critic Cruise Styles: World Cruises
Ships that operate these voyages are usually the lines' most comfortable, onboard entertainment definitely varies from the norm (think fl-tie galas, themed balls and specialty parties) and the world cruise itinerary offers the carrot of a few first-time-ever port calls.
The very first "Around the World" cruise dates back to 1922, on Cunard Line's then-new and quite elegant 19,680-ton SS Laconia.
The tradition has continued on Cunard, with its now venerable Queen Elizabeth 2.
