The Nitta Maru (æ—°ç"°ä¸¸) was a trans-pacific passenger liner built for the N.Y.K. Line sold to the Imperial Japanese Navy.
The Nitta Maru was one of three ocean liners, its two sisters were the SS Yawata Maru, and SS Kasuga Maru.
None of the three survived the second world war, and each was turned into a troopship and later converted to an aircraft carrier.

A member of the Naval Academy Class of 1921 and an excellent pilot, he had flown fighters and flying boats, and had been schooled in strategy and tactics.

They were transported in a decrepit tramp steamer, the Yubi Maru, to Sandakan to help build a military airstrip for the Japanese.
A total of 98 crew and passengers (including some British subjects) were massacred by sword and spanners used as clubs by the submarine's crew.

Five of Wake's defenders were executed by the Japanese on board Nitta Maru, With the exception of nearly 100 contractors who remained on Wake Island, all the rest of the civilians joined Wake's Marines, sailors, and soldiers in prisoner of war (POW) camps.
The Japanese transported the wounded military men and civilians from the island as their wounds healed and they were deemed well enough to travel.

He was sent to China first, on the Nitta Maru, then later in the war sent to Osaka, Japan.
I miss his stories and most of all I miss him very much.
The prisoner crew was from the norwegian ship HERSTEIN so sank after bombing ind the harbour of Rabaul.
