Built by Lobnitz and Co., of Renfrew, she is of special interest as she was built on older classic lines with a traditional wheelhouse, of riveted and welded construction with a straight stem and a cruiser stern.
Shieldhall was operated by Glasgow Corporation to transport treated sewage sludge down the river Clyde to be dumped at sea.
Shieldhall was purchased by the Southern Water Authority in 1977 and after minor modifications, she carried sludge from Southampton to an area south of the Isle of Wight for five years from 1980.

The second largest steamship in the world preserved by volunteers, SHIELDHALL was built for Glasgow Corporation for sludge disposal work as replacement for an older namesake which, for the last few months of her life, sailed as SHIELDHALL II.
Since that time, each of the ships, including the SHIELDHALL and her successor, the GARROCH HEAD of 1977, has been provided with comfortable accommodation and a summer passenger certificate allows passengers to be carried on the river to a position not more than 4 miles SSW of Garroch Head.
In 1977 SHIELDHALL was sold for further use to Southern Water Authority until eventually laid up in 1985 and finally handed over to the Solent Steam Packet Ltd. in June 1988.

 Newhaven Life Boat - 200th Anniversary Celebrations
Away from the display ground on the East Quay the preserved steamship SS Shieldhall was open to the public.
Whilst most of the guests boarded from the quay a designated crew took the lifeboat alongside the Shieldhall in case of callout, which could have been delayed by the entire crew being on the "wrong" side of the river.
The preserved steamship SS Shieldhall took members of the public on a cruise taking in the lifeboat parade and rescue displays in Seaford Bay before proceeding on to Beachy Head and back.

These steamboats had a tradition, dating back to World War I, of taking organised parties of passengers on their trips during the summer, and the accommodation is again being put to good use for cruises.
The 1972-ton Shieldhall was laid down in October 1954, built by Lobnitz and Co. of Renfrew who also constructed the two triple expansion steam engines which are set vertically in a similar way to the much larger engines on the RMS Titanic.

The "Shieldhall" is a heritage steamship, includedd in the National Histroic Ships Core Collection, and is generally recognised to be the largest steamship of her type in Britain, and possibly in Europe.
The steamship's Cruise from Southampton to Weymouth to view Dorset's Jurassic Coast departs at 10.00 a.m and is due to finish at 8.00 p.m.

Sadly those days are gone, the last of these vessels to operate on the Clyde, the DALMARNOCK and GARROCH HEAD, were withdrawn in the 'nineties as a result of EU directives on disposal of waste at sea.
Everyone around the Clyde knew the sludge vessels (although, that term was rarely used - a much more robust, and decidedly Clydeside title was used!) as they daily sailed up and down the river and firth, from Shieldhall and Dalmuir, to empty their 'cargo' into the deeper waters around Garroch Head.
In 1955 Glasgow Corporation were delivered to them a new sludge vessel, the ss SHIELDHALL.
