SS Uganda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SS Uganda was a passenger liner, then cruise ship, hospital ship and troop ship between 1952 and 1986.
When the SS Uganda docked in Naples reporters turned up their microphones to hear a ship full of school children singing Rule Britannia.
Two years later, she was laid up, rusting, in the River Fal and despite efforts to keep her steaming was eventually sold for scrap and, rebadged as the SS Triton, taken on her final voyage to Taiwan (no school children aboard this time - and a crew of just 21) where she anchored awaiting breaking.

IT IS a year now since the demise of the ss Uganda, but such was the impact of this vessel's life on passengers and seafarers alike, I feel the time has come to let it be known how she spent her last days.
Uganda's decks matched her outside appearance, with the deck planking heavily stained with fuel oil from portable generators used during the 13-month lay-up, and with soot streaks on the deck heads from the exhausts, coupled with junk lying about, she presented depressing scene.
Uganda had been converted from a passenger vessel with a five-hatch cargo-carrying layout to a cruise ship for the school children's cruise programme and this made her a more complex job.

 "FAREWELL" UGANDA
UGANDA's wheelhouse dated from the 1967 rebuilding but the binnacle and ship's wheel were her original 1952 fit.
There was a faint hope that she might be saved from the breaker's yard; in October of 1983 a devoted band of followers had formed the "SS UGANDA SOCIETY", their principal aim being the long term preservation of the vessel 'as a classic example of British passenger shipping'.
Whilst the "UGANDA" Society's members were active in trying hard to find ways to save the ship, P and O themselves were active in trying to find a viable alternative to scrapping her.

 Educational cruise ship service
The SS Uganda soon became popular with her passengers, despite her slightly peculiar motion in heavy seas caused by the extra weight on her upper decks following the conversion.
Together with the SS Nevasa, the two vessels, with their distinctive B.I. colours and each carrying around 900 students, soon became a familiar and welcome sight at many European ports.
Most former B.I. ships were repainted in the P&O livery but the SS Uganda and the SS Nevasa were among the few that were allowed to retain B.I. colours, albeit with a P&O houseflag.

Documents on Women's Issues in Uganda
Uganda Women's Network is a membership network of different women's non-governmental organisations, which was set up in 1993, with the main purpose of uplifting the status of Ugandan women through addressing critical concerns.
The study is based on a series of case studies involving conflicts between women's associations and local level authorities; hundreds of in-depth interviews with politicians as well as leaders and members of women's associations at the local and national levels; and a survey of associational life in four parts of the country.
It presents the political context of Uganda, the efforts that have been undertaken by government and NGOs to work towards gender equality, and concludes with the reflections of the writer on her own experiences on working on gender issues in Uganda.

However, she went on to experience an exceptional career as an educational cruise ship, a hospital ship during the Falklands War and, finally, a troopship serving the Falklands while Mount Pleasant Airport was under construction.
The SS Uganda Trust, which has a close association with the former liner and the people associated with her, was created to advance public education in maritime history and to provide educational and recreational facilities for children and young people.

 AEGiS-NV: Should schools issue condoms?
THE change in Uganda's anti-HIV/AIDS campaign strategy to emphasise abstinence, particularly among students, has drawn criticisms from a cross section of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other international agencies and human rights groups.
Critics say the three-pronged approach of Abstinence, Be faithful and Condom use, popularly known as the ABC strategy, was the secret behind Uganda's success story in reducing the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate from 18% in the early 1990s to about 6% today.
Dr. JC Muyingo, the headteacher of Uganda Martyrs SS Namugongo, says condoms should never be allowed in secondary schools downwards.
