The submarine fired one more torpedo into the ship and, when last seen, TEIFUKU MARU was awash forward with her screws nearly out of the water.
The damaged 10,021 ton tanker TAKANE MARU was later sunk by submarines SALMON (SS-182) and STERLET (SS-392).
The attack was reported on the 20th, and the submarine was subsequently ordered to radio as many movements of the convoy as possible to help find a safe passage through a known mined area of the East China Sea.

The SS Yawata Maru was an 18,000 ton ocean liner on the trans-Pacific run, sailing from Tokyo to Seattle and down to San Francisco.
One year later she was turned into an aircraft carrier and was bombed along with her sisters SS Nitta Maru and the SS Kasuga Maru.
The Yawata Maru was the only one of the trio that saw passenger service.

Yahata, sometimes spelled Yawata, was the city, Seitetsu refers to iron works as Yahata was part of a huge industrial complex sometimes called the "Pittsburgh of Japan".
Yawata is at the northernmost tip of Kyushu, just across the narrow strait from the port city of Shimoneski on the island of Honshu.
On 23 September 1942 the camp was established at Yahata as the Yahata Provisional POW Camp and occupied by American civilian POWs sent in September from Woosung, China.

The Nitta Maru was a transpacific passenger liner built for the N.Y.K. Line sold to the Imperial Japanese Navy.
The Nitta Maru was one of three ocean liners, its two sisters were the Yawata Maru, and Kasuga Maru.
None of the three survived the second world war and each was turned into a troopship and later converted to an aircraft carrier.

My grandfather, Cecil Saunders, was captured by the Germans when the ship he was travelling in (SS Nankin) was attacked by a German raider in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
He was transferred to a Japanese naval vessel and ended up on the Japanese mainland, and spent the next three years in a civilian Prisoner of War camp at Fukushima, near Yokahama.
Actually, on the way back, the “Awa Maru” was off her course, steaming without lights, and was also full of civilian and military passengers, so it is not surprising that it was sunk by an American submarine.
