USS SAM HOUSTON (SSBN-609) was the third nuclear powered submarine and the first 608 class SSBN to be built at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.
SAM HOUSTON was the initial FBM submarine to deploy to the Mediterranean and join the NATO Forces there, and also the first POLARIS submarine to make a port-of-call during a patrol, when she made a short operational visit to Izmir, Turkey.
SAM HOUSTON's remaining career prior to her decommissioning 6 Jun 91 will be added as compiled.

After 18 years of service, the SAM HOUSTON was redesignated as SSN 609 to comply with the SALT I treaty on November 10, 1980, and concrete blocks were placed in the missile tubes to disable the missile launch capability.

The SAM HOUSTON was finally deactivated on March 1, 1991, and entered the the Navy's Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash. The submarine was both decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on September 6, 1991.

In  1981 SAM HOUSTON was redesigated SSN-609.  Her missiles were removed.  She was subsequently modified to carry 2 Dry Deck Shelters on the After Deck in support of Special Ops (Pacific).
Sam Houston then went on DDS trials in Bangor Wash. returning to Pearl Harbor in June '88.
After 29 years of service SAM HOUSTON was decommissioned and struck from Navy List on 6 June 1991.  She was disposed of by SRP on 28 June 1993.
