SSGN — A Transformational Force for the U.S. Navy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The SSGN’s inherent stealth and endurance — as with all nuclear-powered submarines — will enable it to conduct many traditional SSN surveillance or sea control missions, even though it will be optimized for strike and SOF because of its immense payload capacity.
The first SSGN is scheduled to enter the fleet in 2007.
Completing the first SSGN deployment, she is bound for her homeport in Washington State.

 KingsBayPeriscope.com: SSGNs hit milestone 01/05/06
USS Ohio (SSGN 726), the Navy's first modern guided-missile submarine, took a significant step towards rejoining the fleet Dec. 19, when it arrived at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., with a broom atop its sail to signify its clean sweep of the ship's initial sea trials.
Further, SSGNs will be able to carry two Advanced SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) Delivery Systems, two Dry deck Shelters, or one of each using the lock-in/lock-out chambers as their docking sites.
SSGN embodies a new level of adaptable warfare that is suited for today's security environment.

The Trident SSGN would carry a mix of 132 Tomakawks and NTACMS, all of which could be launched while the vessel remained submerged.
Because it would be linked to a network of sophisticated sensors and communications systems, the Trident SSGN would be able to operate effectively in the absence of other Navy vessels -- an important capability for a platform that might be the sole U.S. presence in-theater on the day a regional conflict commences.
The submerged stealth of the Trident SSGN is expected to provide ample protection against airborne threats, although the system would retain many of the self-defense features of a typical attack sub such as sonar and homing torpedoes to counter undersea threats.

 SSGN: Payload Unlimited
It might become possible for an SSGN to carry in some of her big missile tubes an additional seven torpedoes each -- launched straight up before they level off for the underwater attack on chosen targets.
Beginning with surprise, and protected by other U.S. Armed Forces' in-theater assets, the SSGN could pop up almost anywhere that's held in American or friendly hands during combat, provided only that the water is deep enough to accomodate her draft.
This would allow the SSGN to return the favor of protecting other friendly assets, projecting additional multivalent firepower onshore, at sea, or into the air -- and protecting herself during excursions to the surface.

Transforming the Submarine Force: Integrating Undersea Platforms into the Joint Global Strike Task Force
The four SSGNs that will be in commission by the end of this decade will be able to generate a continuous on-station attack capability equal to joint fires of more than 2.5 Trident SSGNs.
SSNs and SSGNs can remain close-in to the enemy coast and either preempt hostile action, launch on unambiguous warning of an impending strike, and target enemy strike platforms before they launch—or constitute the leading edge of a retaliatory strike and open the door for follow-on forces by creating holes in the enemy’s IADS.
As discussed earlier, there is a trade-off between (1) using the SSGN’s weapons in a JSEAD mission to enable a potentially higher level of effort with air strikes and (2) using its weapons to directly attack centers of gravity with a large but finite inventory of weapons.

Navy Trident Submarine Conversion (SSGN) Program: Background and Issues for Congress
Since the Administration, prior to submitting this budget, had highlighted the Trident SSGN concept as an example of its plans for defense transformation, it came as somewhat of a surprise, particularly to supporters of the SSGN concept, that the Administration requested funding to convert only two of the four Tridents.
In their SOF-support role, the SSGNs would be functional replacements for the James K. Polk (SSN-645) and the Kamehameha (SSBN-642) -- two older-generation SSBNs that were converted into SSNs specifically for supporting larger numbers of SOF personnel.
The Polk was retired in 1999 at age 33; the Kamehameha was retired in 2002 at age 36.

USN SSGN conversion gains support, funding - Jane's Naval News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The US Navy's (USN's) proposed SSGN programme - the conversion of up to four Ohio-class ballistic missile nuclear submarines (SSBNs) that have to be withdrawn from service under arms-control agreements to cruise missile and special forces platforms - now appears more likely to be funded.
It was the only future programme specifically identified by the President in a speech on national security on 25 May. The programme has also been endorsed by a military transformation panel, instigated by Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld.
Tangney noted that the SSGN conversion would include internal modification "so that we've got the space and capacity to have a maritime, submerged, Joint Task Force headquarters and also the ability to carry large numbers of 'operators' in certain types of missions".

Here the SSGN excels; in fact, one of the missions envisioned for the conversion is “future payload experimentation,” an important aspect of the Navy’s Sea Trial program, itself a key component of the Sea Power 21 vision.
The SSGN Concept of Operations envisions several situations where the cruise-missile boat might operate with SSNs in consort, carrying in the Battle Management Center an officer in tactical command “dual-hatted” as a joint task force commander.
The SSGN will be, for the foreseeable future, the nation’s only asset that can deliver significant and immediate deep strikes without relying upon (and having to refuel) land-based aircraft—thus the urgency of solving the multiple and simultaneous OpCon problem.
