Society of St. Pius X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original founding of SSPX is generally considered to be the result of a conservative backlash within the Catholic Church that developed in response to the apparent radical revisions in both liturgy and Church policy that occurred during and after the Second Vatican Council of the early 1960s.
In the early 1980s, several SSPX priests ordained by Lefebvre broke with him or were forced to leave his Society, principally because of his insistence on using the 1962 typical edition of the Roman Missal and on accepting John Paul II as Pope.
Kelly and eight other SSPX priests, known as "the Nine," were expelled by Lefebvre for insisting on using the Roman Missal as it was at the time of Pope Pius XII's death in 1958 and for maintaining that it is, at least, a debatable question whether there has been a pope since then.

For in the Catholic Church it is the living Magisterium alone which has the divinely bestowed competence to mediate and interpret tradition (the second prong of revelation!), not runaway bishops, vagus priests, and over-religious laymen, all of whom have been feeding on Lefebvre's errors, and perhaps a cash-cow, a long time now.
The means to unite the SSPX exists already: the 1984 indult of John Paul II and the Ecclesia Dei commission which has just been expanded by the Pontiff to include Cardinal Ratzinger (whom they have long villified as an architect of the New---read heretical---Theology and modernist) precisely in the interests of facilitating reconciliation.
SSPX Bishop williamson (whom many trads consider a crypto-sedevacantist) in his February 2000 newsletter from Winona hardly seems sincere in any desire for reconciliation; indeed he seems positively hostile to the idea.

When I was associated with the SSPX, to defend the claim that the reformed liturgy is intrinsically evil I used to quote the seventh canon on the Sacrifice of the Mass from the Council of Trent.

That the SSPX was canonically constituted according to the Pio-Benedictine Code is generally accepted, however, some ambiguity exists as to the object of their establishment.  For if one looks at the decree canonically establishing the SSPX, one sees that Bishop Charrière is cautious in his approval of the SSPX, decreeing as follows:
This apparent ambiguity arising from the decree erecting the SSPX would be further compounded in a letter to Archbishop Lefebvre from Cardinal Wright, Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy.
Yet regardless of whether the SSPX was canonically erected as a pious association of the faithful in accordance with c*.

The protocol's main purpose was to regularize the SSPX as a clerical society of apostolic life of pontifical right, remove all censures against the clergy and laity within the Lefebvrite movement, and provide for their future pastoral care.

SSPX Schism: Reasons why the SSPX is in Schism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The main reason given by the SSPX for maintaining their "independence" from the "Official Church" is that, we are told, the Official Church is no longer faithful to Church Law and Catholic Tradition.
The purpose of the SSPX is: "the Priesthood and whatever pertains to it and nothing but what concerns it" (Statutes II.1) and "A second purpose of the Fraternity is to assist the sanctification of priests by providing them with opportunities for retreats and recollections." (Statutes, III.2).
Therefore, if the SSPX priests and bishops DO claim to have jurisdiction because they are in charge of mission territories, they have usurped the authority of the Pope in creating these mission territories, and this would be an act of schism.

Schism is a rupture of unity in the Church.
Fortunately, there are books on canon law and schism which we can study to know whether the SSPX is in schism or not, based on the principle that if someone illegally takes on the jurisdiction belonging to the Pope, then they are in schism – it doesn't matter what the SSPX says otherwise.
Many people now believe that the SSPX has become a destructive mind control cult, whose followers are discouraged from thinking for themselves, and that they are now are in schism from the True Church, despite their claims that they are the only true Catholics in the world today.
