benzo.org.uk : SSRIs, Drug Withdrawal & Abuse: Problem or Treatment? CH Ashton & AH Young, 1999
Advantages of SSRIs include: greater tolerability and safety and a wider range of clinical applications, one of which is a potential use in the treatment of drug abuse and some eating disorders (see also: Chapter 4).
A second factor proposed to account for SSRI withdrawal effects is a decline in serotonergic transmission, although there is no direct evidence for this and the mechanisms for producing particular withdrawal symptoms are obscure.
SSRIs, including zimelidine, citalopram, viqualine and fluoxetine have been shown in controlled studies to decrease alcohol consumption in non-depressed alcoholics and heavy or problem drinkers.

 Medinfo: SSRIs
SSRIs, Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, are a widely used group of antidepressants, which includes such drugs as fluoxetine (Prozac) and paroxetine (Seroxat).
SSRIs are mostly used for treatment of depression, but individual members of the group have other, specialised uses eg anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and social phobia.
SSRIs only work after they have built up in your system, and thus need to be taken regularly, and will start to have their effects after two weeks or more.

Clinical Pharmacology of SSRI's: How SSRIs as a Group Differ From TCAs
SSRIs, because of their more focused pharmacology, have a much more limited range of pharmacodynamically mediated drug-drug interactions than do TCAs.
In contrast, SSRIs as a group have a higher incidence of adverse effects mediated by the indirect potentiation of serotonin via the inhibition of its uptake pump (eg, nausea).
The difference between TCAs and SSRIs with regard to TDM is that it is a standard of care issue with TCAs, but not with SSRIs, due to the difference in their therapeutic indexes (ie, the difference between a dose that is therapeutic and one that is toxic).

Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
The recommended dosage depends on the type of SSRI and the type and severity of depression for which it is being taken.
Because SSRIs work on the central nervous system, they may add to the effects of alcohol and other drugs that slow down the central nervous system, such as antihistamines, cold medicine, allergy medicine, sleep aids, medicine for seizures, tranquilizers, some pain relievers, and muscle relaxants.
SSRIs may occasionally cause dry mouth, although this side effect is much more common with an older class of antidepressants known as tricyclics.

Clinical Pharmacology of SSRI's: How SSRIs as a Group Are Similar
While the effect on antidepressant response and serotonin uptake inhibition of the SSRIs has on average reached the plateau portion of their dose-response curve, that is not true for their discontinuation rate due to adverse effects (Figure 5.1) nor for the effects of specific SSRIs on specific CYP enzymes (eg, fluoxetine on CYP 2D6).
The concentration-dependent nature of antidepressant response with the SSRIs is apparent from the flat-dose antidepressant-response relationship and the fact that it parallels the dose- and concentration-dependent effect on serotonin uptake inhibition (Figure 5.3).
In fact, the manufacturer may actually have a disincentive out of concern that the demonstration of such a relationship might be used to suggest that TDM is necessary with their medication and thus create a perception that may adversely impact the clinical acceptance of the drug.

 TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION - SSRIs
SSRIs are antidepressants which are used to help to improve mood in people who are feeling low or depressed.
The SSRIs are classified as "B" or "C" (fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline are "B", citalopram and fluvoxamine are "C").
No major abnormalities have been reported to date with paroxetine, but some "discontinuation" effects (such as increased breathing rate and jitteriness) have been seen in a few infants for a couple of days after birth, so it may be wise to reduce the dose a little before your due date.

SSRIs cause sexual dysfunction by inhibiting the production of nitric oxide, which is the main mediator of both the male and female sexual arousal response.
The effect of SSRIs on libido may be the result of multiple factors that impact the central nervous system, especially the mesolimbic system.
SSRIs have also been associated with increasing prolactin levels, which may have effects on the central nervous system, resulting in decreased libido.

SSRIs comprise one of the major classes of antidepressants currently being prescribed by primary care physicians.
At first, SSRIs were thought to be associated with weight loss and reduced appetite.

Long-Term Side Effects Surface With SSRIs
When SSRIs first appeared a decade ago, their favorable side effect profile was a key selling point.
With venlafaxine (Effexor), "the side effects are the same as with SSRIs: insomnia, somnolence, lethargy and fatigue, and weight gain, but they are less intense." The new extended-dose formulation causes lower peak plasma levels, which appears to make the drug more tolerable.
Physicians should be aware of the fact that patients who are switched directly from SSRIs to nefazodone experience a higher than expected rate of side effects.

For most people SSRI poop-out is not an issue, but for some any SSRI will work great for a few months to a couple years or more and then suddenly stop working.
If you're taking an atypical antipsychotic along with an SSRI, the discontinuation is often not nearly as bad, so if you have some Seroquel (quetiapine) on hand for insomnia, you'll want to take some for your SSRI discontinuation.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors / SSRIs
SSRIs are prescription medications used to inhibit serotonin reuptake and when used result in a potential increase in serotonin levels, which are found lacking, and used for treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessional and impulse control disorders.
SSRI medications are very effective for certain patients, they may also cause some unwanted reactions if not taken in the right way.
SSRI's were developed to find presription drugs that were as effective as the tricyclic antidepressants but with fewer safety and tolerability problems than with MAO inhibitors (monoamine oxidase inhibitors).

The effects of the SSRIs are therefore more like those of the H-2 blockers than they are like the effects of antibiotics for ulcers – they appear to have led to increases rather than reductions in the size of the population apparently affected in a manner that is inconsistent with claiming that these drugs work.
In the case of the SSRIs and suicide, as early as 1992, there was replicated evidence of CDR, and dose response relationships between these drugs and suicide as well as evidence for an ability to intervene on the basis of antidotes to a proposed mechanism of action.
In the case of SSRI agents and possible suicidality, the only reasonable end point that would justify the use of patient exposure years or a survival analysis is the appearance of agitation.

Suicidal Behaviour Caused By Antidepressants "Cannot Be Ruled Out"
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressant, yet concerns have arisen that these drugs may induce or worsen suicidal feelings in vulnerable patients.
Increased risks of suicide and self harm caused by SSRIs cannot be ruled out, say the authors, but larger trials with longer monitoring periods are needed to assess the balance of risks and benefits fully.
The finding that SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants have a similar risk profile with respect to suicide and self harm is reassuring, say the authors.

The Crenshaw Clinic (now closed) was operated by Theresa Crenshaw, M.D. (now retired), one of the nation's most prominent sex and drug researchers and coauthor of the medical text "Sexual Pharmacology." Crenshaw and her colleagues gave 60 men and women suffering from low libido and difficulty with orgasm either a placebo or Wellbutrin.
According to May, patients on SSRIs who are suffering sex problems because of it can ask their doctors about using a low dose of Wellbutrin (75 milligrams) in addition to their SSRI two hours before sex to mitigate SSRI-induced sexual impairment.

 FDA Antidepressant Suicide Warning
Issue One: From the time SSRIs were first introduced, a handful of experts have raised safety concerns that, for certain individuals, the new antidepressants may cause mental restlessness and suicidality.
When the FDA came out with the warning, coincidentally, I was actually in the midst of uncovering the fact that I was misdiagnosed with Unipolar Depression for about a decade and a half, (I am currently 25,) when in fact I have a form of Bipolar.
My main point is that the extreme reactions I had to the SSRI, (which in hindsight resembled similar actions and states-of-mind back in college and high school,) were due to the fact that I was misdiagnosed years ago, as a teenager, as having Unipolar Major Depression.
