Shimano Total Integration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shimano Total Integration or STI is a system designed by Shimano for racing bicycles which combine the braking and gear shifting mechanisms in the same component.
Instead, the "flipper" that changes to a smaller cog on STI levers changes to a larger cog, and there is a small button on the inside of the lever body that shifts to a smaller cog.
Some cyclists including Lance Armstrong install a standard STI shifter, on climbing specific bikes, for the rear cogs and a downtube shifter for the chainrings in order to reduce weight.

Shimano Total Integration shifters or STI shifters are a system designed by Shimano for road bikes which allowed the braking and gear shifting mechanisms to be housed in the same component, thus allowing the cyclist to change gears without having to take his hands off the handlebars, unlike the previous downtube shifting systems.
STIs and Campagnolo's competing "Ergo" system have by large displaced the downtube shifting system, even though some cyclists still use it for different reasons.

Stem shifters, along with brake extension levers, encouraged riding using only the top of drop handlebars.
Stem shifters also present a danger in a collision.
S.T.I. uses the main brake lever, pushed inward, to select larger sprockets, and a smaller, auxiliary lever inside the brake lever to select smaller sprockets.

Comparison of STI vs. Ergo Levers
From the drops, both the Ergo and STI brakes exhibit similar range of motion and the pivot location is not a factor.
STI is only one solution and, IMHO, it's not the best one for a tandem UNLESS the captain is fully committed to STI on personal bikes that are ridden as much or more often than the tandem.
Similar to the aero brake levers, both the brake and shifter cables are routed out of view under the handlebar tape, leaving the area in front of the handlebars and between the brakes clear of any cable housing.

Legacy Central -- STi Short Throw Shifter
A shortened shifter and stiffer bushings on the linkage make the gear engagement quicker and more accurate than with the relatively sloppy stock setup.
He proclaimed that the shifter was right and that that was the narrowest one he made.
Richard mentioned that the shifter kit had previously included the extra parts to make it all work, but STi had since eliminated that part from the package, not reduced the price, and now charged $40 for it.

STI braker/shifter units are heavier than a solo brake lever, but often weigh no more than an uncombined brake lever and shift lever.
STI shifters don’t have a friction-shifting mode, and require Shimano-compatible derailleurs and gears.
Functionally, TakeOffs with downtube shifters work the same as downtube shifters, in that you pull the left one back to shift a front derailleur outward, to a larger (higher gear) chainring; and you pull the right one back to shift to a larger (lower gear) rear cog.

NASIOC - Stock WRX shifter vs. STi SS vs. Kartboy
The STi shifter with KB bushings had a 1 3/4" throw from 3rd to N and from N to 4th.
A SS lever should not effect the way it feels, that would be in the bushings, linkage and transmission itself, unlike the STI SS which replaces the lever and the linkage and bushings going to the transmission.
But with the STI you are changing more than just the lever, and if you don't like the way the STI feels and do like the way the stock WRX shifter lever feels with the kartboy bushings, I think you would like it better with the kartboy SS.

There has been a lot of conjecture on this borad that the STi untis are simply the exact same shifters as in our cars with the exception of a different shifter and harder bushings.
I have the STi shifter as a dealer installed option, however they left the OEM bushings on which sort of annoyed me. As an option it sure's hell didn't cost me 450 bucks, more like 200.
I had both the OEM and STi version side by side, they are indeed different but you have to look closely since they play with linkage leverage ratios more than shifter arm length.

The 7-speed units are no longer available, but the 8-speed shifters actually work quite well with 7-speed cassettes, especially with modern rear derailers.
We don't generally recommend buying 8-speed shifters, because any bike that needs them can be converted to 9-speed just by adding a 9-speed chain and cassette, with 9-speed shifters.
Since th shifters are the most expensive part of the conversion, and the other two items are "consumables" it usually makes sense to upgrade to 9-speed.

If you want to stick to STI but don't want to worry about short life, upgrade to Dura Ace units (they have a three speed front now).
If you just want something simple that can almost never break down to leave you stranded, either a down tube or bar end would be the way to go.
They are so simple and clean, all this aero stuff and integrated brake-shifters etc. don't do anything but add complexity, parts, and potential problems.
