STOBAR considered to meet CVF requirement-05/11/2002-Flight International   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Bidders to design the UK's CVF future aircraft carrier are turning their attention to short take-off but assisted recovery (STOBAR) as a means of operating large fixed-wing aircraft.
STOBAR, which uses a bow ski-jump rather than a catapult to launch the aircraft, coupled with arrestor gear to aid recovery, is not sanctioned by the MoD, which is concentrating on STOVL operations, say industry sources.
STOBAR, however, would allow the RN to operate a fixed-wing aircraft to meet its Maritime Airborne Surveillance Capability (MASC)requirement for organic airborne early warning and control.

STOBAR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
STOBAR (Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery) is a system used for the launch and recovery of aircraft from the deck of an aircraft carrier, combining elements of both STOVL and CATOBAR.
The Russian Navy aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov is the most prominent current example of a STOBAR carrier.
When the Eurofighter was proposed for the "Future Carrier Borne Aircraft" it was envisaged that it would operate in a STOBAR configuration.

 CV(F), the future British-French carriers
STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested landing): This was the solution chosen by the Soviets and their Su-33 Flanker D. It consists in a take-off without a catapulte, on the entire deck length, and a conventionnal landing with arresting wires.
Should Great Britain retain the STOBAR option, the plane likely to be chosen is the Eurofighter EF 2000 Typhoon (N), navalised version of the Typhoon in service with the RAF.
In the case of a STOVL or STOBAR solution, the probable choice could be an AEW version of the english-italian EH-101 Merlin helicopter, the replacement for the Sea King in most of its missions.

NWC Review, Summer 2001: Jordan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
A STOBAR carrier needs arresting gear, which, as noted, demands a large deck crew at a time when the Royal Navy will be seeking to embark as small a complement on the CV(F) as is viable.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is currently the subject of a British Aerospace study to assess its viability as a carrierborne aircraft, and it is quite clear that although the study is at an early stage, it is being taken seriously.
Consequently, the STOBAR option is plausible, with the choice between an existing aircraft type, the Rafale (which will be fully mature technology in 2012, but not outdated), and the slightly newer–design Typhoon, which is generally reckoned to be more capable.

Navy Matters | CVF Deck Layouts
It appears that a 1000 ft/300m long CVF STOBAR deck arranged like the Kuznetzov (which has a 999ft/305m long x 230ft/70m wide flightdeck) can accommodate about 34-36 non-wing-fold Sea Typhoons on the deck, assuming that there are heavily-loaded aircraft which requires position 2 to be free during a launch event.
This time, I utilized the proposed "split-bow" large STOBAR CVF design to see how it fares when it comes to deck reconfiguration for a launch event, and here is the result.
Though I don't know where the inboard elevators would go on a proposed large STOBAR CVF like this, I'd bet there is still room to spare for the lifts to operate even while the deck is configured for a launch event.

The second option considered was the conversion of a merchant vessel with a 20 strong airgroup, this was quickly discarded as unsatisfactory on grounds of both cost and operational effectiveness.
The smallest practical design for a STOBAR or CTOL carrier able to support the required size of airgroup was determined by the DPA to be about 43-46,000 tonnes.
The STOBAR CVF design was eliminated in January 2001, at the end of Assessment Phase Stage 1, but the two competing carrier contractors (BAE Systems and Thales Naval) continued to develop designs based on operating STOVL or CTOL aircraft.

 GDR 99 - Seaborne Systems
Award of the prime contractorship is planned for 2003 and final acceptance of contract for the first vessel is in 2010.
However, operational analysis appears to have concluded that the most effective solution is a 30-40,000-ton vessel with an air group of 40 aircraft, typically 30 FCBA, six helicopters, and four future organic airborne early-warning (FOAEW) types, although the mix is meant to be capable of surging to 50 aircraft.
Of these, the Rafale is almost certainly politically-unacceptable, the F/A-18, even in its developed form, is an elderly design and the Harrier, that is approaching the end of its design life, is probably capable of accepting only limited further refinements.

Arrestor wires are thick steel cables fitted to the aft end of the flight deck on CTOL (CTOL: more facts about this subject) and STOBAR (STOBAR: more facts about this subject) aircraft carriers (aircraft carriers: A large warship that carries planes and has a long flat deck for take-offs and landings).
The cables allow CTOL aircraft to land safely on the short runway by connecting with a hook attached to the aircraft.
Most aircraft carriers have four wires - naval aviators receive marks for each landing, with the best mark being gained for catching the third wire (third from the front).
