SU carburetor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
SU carburetteurs (named for Skinners Union, the company which produced them) were a brand of sidedraft carburetor widely used in British (Triumph, MG) and Swedish (Volvo, Saab 99) automobiles for much of the twentieth century.
Hitachi also built carburetors based on the SU design which were used on the Datsun 240Z and other Datsun Cars.
The piston is moved up and down by the partial vacuum in the inlet manifold, depending on the position of the throttle plate, between the carburetor piston and the manifold.

In the factory machining of SU carb bodies there always seems to be some rough flash metal protrusions left, some quite prominent, where the horizontal bore of the body proper intersects the vertical bore for the piston.
The purpose of the SU damper is to retard the rapid upward movement of the piston on rapid throttle opening associated with acceleration.
SU carburetor suction chambers and pistons are furnished as matched assemblies from the factory.

 TECHNICAL TIP #6
As you tune an SU at idle, this means that you temporarily have a rich mixture which can fool you into believing that you should turn the mixture adjusting nuts (called "idle adjusting nuts" in the Nissan article) so as to lean out the mixture.
Apply a flow meter to front carburetor air cleaner flange, turn in or out air flow adjusting screw, and align the upper end of the float in the glass tube to the scale.
Although carburetor may be normal, if the electrical system is defective, the cause of trouble sometimes may seem to be in carburetor.

SU carbs were used on the early Triumphs, while ZS carbs were used on the later ones.
On early SU carbs, this is the lower of the two nuts at the very bottom of the carburetor.
SU and ZS carburetors are most fuel-efficient when slightly lean, and provide the most power when they are slightly rich.

SU carburetors are most fuel-efficient when slightly lean, and provide the most power when they are slightly rich.
To test for this, spray some carburetor cleaner on the outside of the throttle shaft; carburetor cleaner is non-combustible, and if the engine speed drops, it means some of this is getting into the air stream from outside the carburetor.

British Automotive - Technical Information (MGB 19)
While a very reliable carb/manifold set up, a disadvantage with this carburetor is the fact that the primary venturi accounts for two thirds of the throttle open position (no CFM* figures are given for this position) with the secondary venturi becoming active in the final one third of throttle movement.
Carburetor can be modified to allow the primary and secondary throttle plates to open simultaneously plus modifications to the progression circuit and accelerator pump.
Remember HS4/HIF4 SU carburetors, especially HIF4, are sensitive to ambient and coolant temperatures and really require some sort of heat exchanger or preheat device to assist in drivability problems during the engine "warm-up" period.

After installing a rebuild kit in an SU carburetor (especially an H-series) it is sometimes impossible to achieve a sufficiently lean mixture by manipulation of the mixture adjusting nut alone.
When properly assembled, only a thin line of cork (0.5 mm) will be visible between the carburetor body and the top edge of the aluminum cupped washer.
Since the metal of the carburetor body is soft, do not, in your enthusiasm to squish the cork seal to its proper dimension, over-tighten the securing nut!

Island Automotion rebuilds the famous SU (Skinner's Union) carburetors found on so many favourite classic cars, including the MG series like the MGA and MGB and MGC, and Triumphs like the TR-4 and Spitfire.
In the 1960's the Zenith Stromberg carburetor was developed, in two basic sizes, the CD150 and the CD175.
Of course in the early days of the SU carburetor, George and Carl Skinner used a leather bellows which deflected upwards with increasing airflow and decreasing pressure, and it could be argued that this design preceded the hydrin diaphragm of the Stromberg by many years.

Originally designed as an SU replacement performance carb for Harley Davidson motorcycles, it is a larger version of flat slide carbs used on smaller motorcycles.
Carburetor development for automobiles stagnated more than 30 years ago when automotive manufacturers turned to fuel injection to meet emissions and fuel economy requirements, while at the same time, the evolution of carburetor design for motorcycles, snowmobiles and jet skis continued at a rapid pace.
Compared to SU carbs, they are easier to tune because specific jets meter fuel for various throttle openings.
