SWIG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SWIG (Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator) is a free computer software tool used to connect programs written in C/C++ with scripting languages such as Lua, Tcl, Perl, Python, Ruby, Guile, Chicken, PHP and other languages like Java, C#, and Ocaml.
SWIG is written in C and C++ and has been publicly available since February 1996.
SWIG has been released under a BSD type license, meaning it can be used, copied, modified and redistributed freely, for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

SWIG is a tool that exposes C libraries to a number of language and environments, so that a highly optimized primitives can be combined seamlessly from within dynamic and interactive languages, thereby aiming at providing the best of both worlds: the performance of C and the flexibility and interactivity of interpreted environments.
SWIG is a compiler that takes C declarations as input and creates the wrappers needed to access those declarations from other languages.

 The SWIG Method
SWIG should appeal to a couple of types of homebrewer: small-scale (5 gallon) brewers who want to increase their volume without increasing brewing time or equipment costs, and larger-scale (10-12 gallon) brewers who find they end up with a little too much of one style of beer and would like some diversity in their brewing.
As mentioned above, SWIG recipe formulation presents two challenges over standard approaches in that mash efficiency is a little more difficult to predict, and reduced hop bitterness extracted at higher wort gravities requires adjustment to the amount of hops added for bitterness and flavour.
SWIG is a technique I have developed to be able to move back indoors and brew more kinds of beer with less effort, and I've discovered it produces very good beer – as good as the beer I was making with full-wort boils.

Fourth Annual USENIX Tcl/Tk Workshop, 1996
I present SWIG (Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator), a program development tool that automatically generates the bindings between C/C++ code and common scripting languages including Tcl, Python, Perl and Guile.
Unlike many other approaches, SWIG uses ANSI C/C++ declarations and requires the user to make virtually no modifications to the underlying C code.
SWIG has been primarily designed for scientists, engineers, and application developers who would like to use scripting languages with their C/C++ programs without worrying about the underlying implementation details of each language or using a complicated software development tool.

In my POV, OO bindings are essential for good scripting language bindings for a language which supports OO, which all of Guile, Python, Perl, Ruby (and others) do.
Maybe someony should have a look at the Ruby GTK+2 binding engine, so that Ruby is not locked out, if SWIG isn't not chosen.

I added a "get_swig_handle" method that returns the request_rec code into the SWIG representation of a pointer.
I'll then write little SWIG code to pull things out of the mod_ssl context.

SWIG can parse header files and generate modules for various scripting languages, including Python.
So, for example, a SWIG interface file might say int UsingSSL(request_rec* r); char* GetClientDN(request_rec* r); and so on.
It turns out to be not that hard, because SWIG actually uses strings to represent pointers.
