Socialist Workers Party (Britain) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By 1982 the SWP was refocused completely on a propagandist approach, with geographical branches as the main unit of the party, a focus on Marxist theory and an abandonment of perspective of building a rank and file movement.
This idea led the founder of the SWP, Tony Cliff, to reject the idea that the USSR was a degenerated workers' state, the position held by other Trotskyists and derived from Leon Trotsky's analysis in the 1930's.
The SWP has been accused of being overly willing to accommodate the concerns of the Muslim community – for example the SWP is the largest British leftist party with a policy of Anti-Zionism – and it has also been accused of sidelining the issues of gay rights and abortion.

Frontline 8 - Where is the SWP Going?
The new orientation was subsequently generalised, and the SWP quickly became the backbone of the Socialist Alliance nationally.
SWP leaders now explain that for 20-25 years they had fallen back on a propagandist "building the party" line, which they admit had overheads in terms of fostering sectarian/conservative attitudes which now have to be broken from.
The SWP seems to counter pose revolutionary parties, by which it means organisations like itself, to the new parties which are developing 6.

Absence of democracy in the SWP
We were long long-standing members of the SWP before we resigned in April 2002 (SB for 19 years; RH for 16 years) and now, some 16 months later, we wish to expound on the reasons for leaving an organisation that had played such a central role in our lives.
Given that the SWP is the largest left organisation in England and Wales, this is not just a personal issue for two ex-members but also has very serious implications for the left, including prospects for left unity.
This, of course, is the essence of democratic centralism, the organising principle which the SWP purportedly advocates.

 SHUT THE G8 -- worthing's anti G8 movement
What the SWP argued for at the 2001 Labour conference was a sort of Seattle in reverse - instead of trying to get unions and workers to join the direct action they wanted the direct action to stop so as not to upset the union leaders.
SWP members argued that the ANL should not oppose the racist march because "even such a movement on the empty streets of the city of London facing 8,000 police might not have broken through and beaten the Nazi marchers"16.
The SWP, supporting only legal trade unionism, condemend the hit squads, arguing that "we are opposed to individuals or groups using violence as a substitute for class struggle" (17) and that "such raids can give trade union officials an excuse not to deliver solidarity" (18).

 "Only A Game!"
The temporary chair of the meeting, Angela McCormick (SWP), stated that “the campaign will have no part in the use of force”, but then added “that if AFA felt it wanted to carry out this course of action it should as an alternative”.
When again it was proposed that it would be a better idea to try to find a speaker from within the Wynford area who could speak ‘to and was from the local community’, the idea, that this could happen was ridiculed.
Interestingly, AFA were told that these meetings ‘were not intended for political debate’, and anyway, the SWP ‘were sick of the internet debate between Red Action and the Left’ then underway.

Fred, the UK is called a democracy but in effect is not.
People did die to win the vote, and now their deaths are in vain because Britain is not really a democracy, because you can't vote for who you want (all the parties are capitalists and have the same policies- whats the point?).

"All the time Mr Galloway and the SWP were referring to their new party as a "coalition", they knew it would have to register as a single political party to contest the elections.

SWP: The Elephant In The Corner? - Ireland / Britain Anarchist movement - Anarkismo
The SWP leadership claimed that this was a racist attack when they knew full well that it was merely a protest at the secretive and almost entirely undemocratic nature of the event.
If the SWP leadership were content to start their own campaigns and leave us to do ours, without interference and control freakery, then this option might stand a chance.
Until we recognise that Marxist Leninism, and the SWP version in particular, is an enemy, then we are doomed to watch the SWP and its seemingly self-appointed and self-perpetuating leadership relentlessly use and abuse our struggles and causes for their own ends.

UK Watch - Home   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
In December 2003, the UK networks and organisations wanting to be involved in the ESF had their first meeting at the London Mayor’s headquarters, City Hall, to discuss the possibility of holding the Forum in the UK.
This reasoning was alien to the UK ‘verticals’ who believed that they held the necessary objective insight to decide who was excluded and who was not, regardless of what those who felt themselves to be excluded thought.
At a UK meeting, it was argued that as a result of these letters, all of the UK trade union money had been withdrawn and the ESF would not be able to take place.

However, the SWP have done just that with regard to the most visible manifestation of the social forum movement in the UK - the 'mobilisation' for the European Social Forum: first for the forum in Florence this November, and now for the forum in Paris next November.
At the last meeting called to discuss the future of the social forum movement in Europe and the UK a large, largely spontaneous contingent of libertarians and independents successfully derailed the SWPÂ’s attempts to control the agenda as they had done throughout the lead-up to the Florence social forum.
As such, the debate over the future of the social forum movement in the UK can only be impoverished if the voices of the direct-action and anarchist wings who have built and inspired this movement are not heard.
