SWTPC (Southwest Technical Products Corporation) was a designer and manufacturer of electronic products, many available in kit form, based in San Antonio, Texas, in the US.
When microprocessors (CPU chips) became available, SWTPC became one of the first suppliers of microcomputers to the general public, focusing on designs using the Motorola 6800, and later the 6809, CPUs.
SWTPC's SS-50 bus was supported by several other manufacturers (eg, Midwest Scientific Inc, Smoke Signal Broadcasting, Gimix, Helix, Tano, etc) and was even extended to the SS-64 (for the 68000 CPU) by Helix.

SwTPC was originally an electronics supply company, selling power supplies, inexpensive video displays, and electronics kits to hobbyists.
1975 - SwTPC 6800, with the Motorola 6800 CPU.
Instead of using the S-100 bus which had become standard on many other computers, SwTPC utilized their own bus, the SS-50 bus, as seen above, with only 50 connections instead of 100.

The second SWTPC 6800 in my collection, pictured at the top of the page, is a more traditional machine.
I've got about one-and-a-half SWTPC systems - including the 'till roll' printer, all the manuals (I think) and the 6809 upgrade card to allow Flex-9 to be run (and the 8 Flex-9 system disks).
Would be happy to 'look after' any surplus SWTPC kit and/or get together to set up some sort of archive/library of the ROM images so we can get these beasties running again.

The first question is which Motorola Processor are you talking about as SWTPC eventually provided systems for 6800, 6809 and 68000.
SWTPC eventually came out with their own "swat bug" (SWTBUG) which used the whole 1Kb.
SWTPC just implemented the hardware in a much more expandable format.

It was released for DMA-capable 8" floppy, extended addresses, Motorola 6809 based computers; eg SWTPC, GIMIX.
On SWTPC machines, it also supported a 20MB, 14" hard drive (OEM'd from Century Data Systems) in 1979.
It was based on Mini-Micro CDS/ISIS that is an advanced non-numerical information storage and retrieval software developed by UNESCO since 1985 [1].

Before selling any computers, SwTPC had been in business selling electronic kits, amplifiers and such.
We will all be very lucky if the industry is ever again dominated by companies and people like these.
Daniel Meyer, the founder of SwTPC, passed away in May of this year (1998).

 The SWTPC Computer Documentation Repository
This site's purpose is to address the lack of technical information for some of the rarer vintage computers and related peripherals, with a strong focus on SWTPC.
I realize that SWTPC also supplied in kit form audio amplifiers, a theremin, frequency counters, and I'm sure other things I'm not aware of.
If you have scanned documentation, literature or catalogs and scanned or digital photos of these non-computer SWTPC items and would like to have them added to this site, please contact me.

 [DIY] Cost of high power amps
Leach spec'ed these in his early designs, they were also used in the GAS Ampzilla, SWTPC, and many other amplifiers.
Even better would be to just buy a pair used and bridge them to get the power your looking for, or purchase another top rated higher power model as others have suggested.
I layed it out and scratch built the chassis and power supply from surplus parts when I was a kid with a lot of time on my hands, and finished it in my Junior year in college when I got the rest of the parts together.

The Southwest Technical Products 6800 was introduced in late 1975 based on the the SS-50 bus and the Motorola 6800 processor rather than the S-100 bus with Intel or Z-80 processor boards.
We are especially pleased with the condition of the rare blue monitor.
When I bought a copy from SWTPC one of the authors contacted me to find out how I was going to use it.

Typically one port would be used as a data port and the other as a control port.
Data would be clocked into that data port from the SWTPC and a byte written to the control register to indicate the data is valid.
A write from the SWTPC to its control register generates an interrupt request to the HC11, and similarly a write by the HC11 to the SWTPC generates in interrupt to the SWTPC.

Steve Jobs wrote an article about interfacing an Apple 1 to the SWTPC PR-40 printer in the October 1976 issue of Interface Age.
A switch was connected and whenever you wanted to print you put the switch in the "on" position and everything that went to the screen went to the printer, as well.
This is an original SWTPC PR-40 printer ribbon.

The SWTPC S/09 system was the second computer of the brand based on the Motorola 6809 microprocessor, said to be the most powerful 8-bits general purpose MPU available.
My old SWTPC has an IDE interface and an IDE HD with 96 partitions of 16 megabytes each (the maximum size that can be supported by the FLEX operating system).
Hardware and software design of the IDE interface was a colaboration of members of the FUG, Flex User Group.

I collected almost every computer kit that SWTPC made from 1976 to 1981, and somehow I still have all the documentation.
The FLEX User's Group has done a good job on most of the TSC and SWTPC software documentation but no one has done the hardware documentation.
The early SWTPC kit documentation was typewritten and had some misspelled words and simple formatting.

My brother, as a ham radio and electronics nut, built a SouthWest Technical Products Company (SWTPC) 6800-based microcomputer around 1975 and we both played with software for it.
I vaguely remember building a simple speech recognition board for the SWTPC and some software using Z-crossing based on an article that I read somewhere (I think it was Kilobaud).
I had a letter to the editor published in Byte in December 1976 (whoo-hoo!) about IF-ELSE and CASE statements that drew a few comments.
