Kim Gordon/Ikue Mori/DJ Olive: SYR5: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
SYR5, soon to be known as "the aqua one," is the end product of a collaboration between Kim Gordon, ex-DNA drummer Ikue Mori, and "illbient" scenester DJ Olive (of We).
To give them some credit, SYR5 is a successful articulation of what Gordon, Mori, and DJ Olive set out to produce, which according to Smells Like Records' website, is "the unified concept of sound/energy dynamix." That's the "goal." Too bad that goal was already accomplished by MTV's Party to Go series.
DJ Olive's signature off-kilter beats and Ikue Mori's lush, "my Alesis is one with the rainforest" environmental soundscapes combine to create subtle, moving textures that are playful as often as they are unsettling.

Rockbites: Kim Gordon releases SYR5 on CD, double vinyl LP
The set is performed mostly by a trio consisting of Gordon on guitar and vocals, drummer/samples player Ikue Nori (of the legendary DNA), and DJ Olive (of illbient underground band We).
SYR5 was produced with Chicago sound guru Jim O’Rourke (who’s been touring as a member of Sonic Youth this year) and recorded by Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, White Zombie, Swans, and the William Shatner Priceline ads).
The album is notable for Gordon’s return to electric guitar, on which she started in Sonic Youth before migrating to bass, and for her improvisational vocal style.

The Stranger - Music - CD Review - CD Review Revue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
SYR5 is Sonic Youth Records' fifth release and its first that doesn't feature Sonic Youth proper.
The album is an improvisational trio featuring Kim Gordon on vocals and guitar, illbient pioneer DJ Olive, and ex-DNA no wave drummer Ikue Mori creating glistening, abstract electronic soundscapes over which Gordon delivers her femme mystère free-vox performance.
The moody, weightless atmosphere and silvery effects move from subliminal to captivating, creating a simpatico space for Gordon's free-associating, which is an extension of the technique she hinted at on "Contre le Sexisme." "We Are the Princesses" is a particularly good example here.

Next Thursday, the same trio set up shop at Flywheel (413-527-9800) in Easthampton for a family affair for which the opening group is a trio featuring Kim Gordon with downtown NYC pals Ikue Mori and DJ Olive, all regulars at the progressive/avant-electronic hotspot Tonic.
We presume Gordon and company will be doing something resembling their SYR5 disc on SY drummer Steve Shelley's Smells Like label.
And next Friday, at the other end of the state, T.T. the Bear's Place (617-492-BEAR) in Cambridge hosts a gig featuring three solo artists from the Smells Like roster.

An improv trio boasting the likes of Ikue Mori on drum programming, DJ Olive on turntables and samples and Sonic Youth's bassist Kim Gordon (here featured on guitar) ought to bode well for some riveting 21st-century soundscaping.
An exhilarating dash of reggae skank interrupting an implosion of feedback at the very end of the set gives an all-too-brief indication of what might have been.
Mixed by Jim O'Rourke and featuring Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda on one track, SYR5 bears all the signifiers of pathbreaking avantgardism without delivering the actual goods.

Over the years, she learned to incorporate drum machines and electronic effects units as her instruments of choice.
She, too, has also become a queen of art-rock collaborations, sharing projects with Zorn, Frith, filmmaker Abigail Child and, more recently, SYR5, a quartet featuring Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, plus DJ Olive and producer/underground hero Jim O’Rourke.
Given that their collective background could potentially include seemingly every permutation of music known to humanity, Hemophiliac promises something very special, indeed.

The release of a new project linked to Sonic Youth always represents an event for lovers of experimentation and extreme sound.
This is the fifth release for Sonic Youth Records (it's also labeled as SYR5) and Kim Gordan here takes a break from bass to once more shoulder the guitar; Dj Olive and DNA's old drummer accompany her on the voyage.
And it is a voyage, at the beginning of which the Dantescan expression of infernal memory 'Abandon hope all ye who enter here' springs to mind.
