Saab Tunnan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SAAB J 29 Tunnan (The Barrel) was a Swedish fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by Saab 1950 - 1956.
The SAAB 29 prototype that flew for the first time on 1 September 1948 was a small, chubby aircraft with a single central air intake, a bubble cockpit and a very thin swept-back wing.
Tunnan held the world speed record for about a year in 1954 when it set the record at 977 km/h; the record was beaten by an American F-86 Sabre.

 The SAAB 29 Tunnan
SAAB engineers had no knowledge of the P-80 when they drew up the R-101 design, and when they found out about the Shooting Star they realized they were several years behind the times and went back to the drawing board.
Through the assistance of the Swiss, SAAB engineers were also able to get their hands on German aerodynamic research data from the war that demonstrated the effectiveness of a swept wing for high-speed flight, and so modified the original straight wing to a wing with a sweepback of 25 degrees.
This wing was used on a new Tunnan variant, the "J-29E", with the prototype flying on 3 December 1953.

The Saab 29 was the first European, post WWII, swept-wing jet fighter in service (the Messerschmitt Me262 being the first ever).
Tunnan means The Barrel, often referred to as Flygande Tunnan, The Flying Barrel.
Saab had a very tight delivery schedule for the fighters to the air force, which made it impossible for them to also build the required 20 trainers.

 Heller 1/72 Saab J/S 29 Tunnan
One of the 'first generation' of post-war jet fighters, the Saab 29 owed much to two things: one was German wartime research on swept wing aircraft, which found it's way into Swedish hands via a circuitous route in late 1945.
Among Swedish aircraft, the Saab 29 has the rare distinction of serving in combat, when both fighter and reconnaissance versions were sent to the Congo in the early 1960's, to support UN operations against Katangan rebels during the chaotic period that accompanied the Congo's gaining its' independence from Belgium.
Lastly, there are the IPMS Stockholm colour charts, although the entry for the Saab 29 is somewhat confusing and incomplete.

 The Saab 35 Draken
Further design studies led to a "double delta" scheme, with the thick inner delta (with a sweep of 80 degrees) allowing accommodation of fuel and landing gear, and the thin outer delta (with a sweep of 57 degrees) providing additional lift for low-speed performance and short-field operation while retaining low-drag characteristics for high-speed flight.
In its original configuration, the engine intakes of the Saab 210 were on the nose of the aircraft, separated by a small nosecose in the shape of a pyramid.
The nose cone was later modified to a chisel shape, but as the intake scheme did not provide enough airflow, the the entire forward fuselage was finally redesigned, giving it a long nose and moving the intakes back to the front of the cockpit.

Initially, the Saab 29 was developed as a straight winged fighter with the De Havilland Goblin turbojet powerplant.
The Tunnan remained as Sweden's main air defence asset until 1958 when it was replaced by the more fighter looking Saab 32 Lansen.
The end result is a convincing Tunnan replica that is very accurate in scale dimensions, with only perhaps the usual lack of detail for a kit of this ilk the main criticism...

 The SAAB 35 Draken
A SAAB engineering team under Erik Bratt examined a number of options, but finally focused on a delta-wing design under the follow-on "Project 1250", with the aircraft a radical sweepback of 70 degrees.
The major improvement was a SAAB S37B collision-course FCS with Ericsson PS-01/A radar, used in conjunction with a new armament scheme, with the J35F carrying two semi-active-radar-homing (SARH) RB27 AAMs and a single heat-seeking RB28 AAM or an RB24 Sidewinder under each wing.
In the late 1970s, SAAB resurrected the AJ35 strike-fighter concept in the form of a fairly drastic upgrade, known as the "35 MOD".
