SAAB (originally an acronym for "Svenska Aeroplan AB") was founded as a Swedish aircraft industry in 1937 in the city of Linköping in Sweden.
Saab has been making airplanes since the 1930s, and predecessors to the Gripen were among others the Lansen, the Draken and the Viggen.
Saab Ericsson Space is a joint venture with Ericsson, designing the on board computers used in the Ariane 5 rockets used by the European Space Agency.

Draken was built to replace (additional info and facts about Saab Tunnan) Saab Tunnan and, later, (additional info and facts about Saab Lansen) Saab Lansen.
Although not designed to be a dogfighter, Draken proved to have good instant turn capability and was a very capable fighter.
By then it had been almost totally replaced by (additional info and facts about Saab Viggen) Saab Viggen and (additional info and facts about Saab Gripen) Saab Gripen in Swedish service, although it remains in limited numbers in both military and civilian versions.

 The Saab 35 Draken
In its original configuration, the engine intakes of the Saab 210 were on the nose of the aircraft, separated by a small nosecose in the shape of a pyramid.
Even in its old age, the Draken was regarded as a prize mount by Flygvapnet pilots, as its performance was still impressive, and the fact that it wasn't as easy to fly as later aircraft such as the Viggen made it more of a challenge to a pilot's skill.
The Drakens are expected to remain in operation until 2005.

A SAAB engineering team under Erik Bratt examined a number of options, but finally focused on a delta-wing design under the follow-on "Project 1250", with the aircraft a radical sweepback of 70 degrees.
The major improvement was a SAAB S37B collision-course FCS with Ericsson PS-01/A radar, used in conjunction with a new armament scheme, with the J35F carrying two semi-active-radar-homing (SARH) RB27 AAMs and a single heat-seeking RB28 AAM or an RB24 Sidewinder under each wing.
