In the 1950s Rolf Mellde suggested that Saab should make a small number of open-top two seater sport cars as racing regulations did not allow Saab to tune their cars as much as was needed to be competitive.
In the 1960s Björn Karlström suggested that Saab should develop a new two seater sports car with a two stroke engine, but this time it would be a coupe and not a convertible.
The Sonett III had the type indicator '97' in the chassis number and used the same Ford V4 engine as before, with 1500 cc in 1970 and 1971, and a 1700 cc in later versions.

Saab succeeded in destroying a 20 year reputation in a matter of a year or two.
Saabs of the mid to late 80s were great cars, now I don't think they compare to the reliability of a Mercedes.

Noise seemed to be emanating from front of the engine but was not the clutch release bearing (disengaging clutch had no effect) and could not be the timing chain (wrong end) and definately not the alternator, water pump or belts.
Reading Saab quoted £97 so I took a chance with the old one.
It may be that when I purchased the car it was running on fully synthetic oil and subsequent garage oil changes have used something more affordable.

A 97 w/only 63K and FSH sounds like a good car to own.
The Aisin-Warner auto-trans reliability is about the direct opposite of the old English Borg-Warner unit used in the old 900s and is, of course a totally different setup..
Both our Saabs have this box, both are totally reliable, both have well o'er 100K miles.

I once ordered a simple code reader from Halfords for my Saab 9000, but it didn't work.
Called up the company, they admitted that the reader was premature and that I could return it.
I have also read in mechanical mags that Saab is particularly cagey with giving out public information on how to get it to work.
