The history of the Saab emblem at The SaabMuseum.com - a comprehensive and up-to-date history of Saab cars
Though this symbol was not actually used on any Saab car, it is important in the respect that it is the forerunner of the Saab-Scania corporate symbol that was used between 1984 and 2000, and the new Scania corporate symbol that reverts to the three pointed star of the original symbol.
The simple SAAB logo mounted on wings, to signify its aircraft origins, was used on the bonnets of models 92, 93, 94 (Saab Sonett Super Sport), 95 and 96 between 1949 and 1962.
Saab Automobile AB introduced the new corporate symbol of the red Gripen head and gold crown with the name SAAB in silver beneath it all contained within a blue roundel.

© Saab Automobile AB The Saab 9-3 was launched in 1998 essentially as a rebadged Saab 900 (1994-1997 model).
There was very little to tell them apart externally, except for a redesigned grille (more similar to the recently launched Saab 9-5) and the relocation of the third "high-level" brakelight from the boot ridge to the top of the rear screen.
Over 1,100 changes including suspension in an attempt to tighten up the handling characteristics of its predecessor, the Saab 900 (1994-1997 model), for which these new General Motors influenced Saabs had been much maligned by the auto press.

AirToAirCombat.Com: Saab AB AJ-37 Viggen Details
The Viggen was originally fitted with a SAAB ""Mark 2"" rocket-boosted ejection seat with zero-altitude capability, but as demonstrated by the accident that killed Lennart Fryoe, the aircraft had to be moving 75 KPH (47 MPH) or more for the seat to work reliably.
It is an indication of the Swedish ""do it ourselves"" mentality that SAAB actually developed their own ejection seat, when a all-but-standard British Martin Baker seat would have probably been as good or better in technical and economic respects.
SAAB also manufactured the old Hughes AIM-4 Falcon AAM as the ""Rb-28"" and the Viggen could carry heat-seeking Falcons, but this weapon was obsolescent and gradually phased out.
