In 1960 the Saab 93f was being replaced by the Saab 96 and a new 750 cc engine was developed.
These ideas led to the creation of the Formula Junior race cars with which Saab surprised the motor racing world in the late fall of 1960.
The design was (of course) advanced, instead of using a spaceframe chassis like the others Saab chose to construct an advanced monocoque car.

A handful of attendees at the 2000 Saab Owner's Convention in Kerhonkson, New York were lucky enough to see Bud Clark, Dave Hosmer, and Ralph Millet present a history of the Quantum, complete with with home movies of the road tests performed at Lime Rock Race Park back in the 60's.
However, Saab executives in Sweden balked at the idea, asserting that Saab could develop its own sports car if needed, and as a result, the Swedish-designed Catherina, MFI 13, and ultimately Sonett came into being, while Walter's Quantums went into private hands back here in the states.

I was fortunate to have met a nice Swedish family that I shared a car with who helped me translate the few Swedish words I was unfamiliar with from a man in his early twenties in the car ahead of us who recently used to work at the factory.
Next time I get over to Sweden for a Saab Festival, I think that camping is the way to go because it seems more relaxed and the environment seems to easily lend itself to meeting others opposed to traditional lodging.
There were numerous classes of races that began from the strokers to the V4s, to the classic 900s, 9000s and finally the special performance groups of 9-3 Viggens, SPGs, etc. I was particularly impressed by the performance and well-kept vintage racecars that filled the track that day.

A Saab tech that I knew told me to stay away from those, but other than that, I haven't heard much negative about the new 9-3.
The 9-5s are still Saab powered, and are a bit roomier than the 9-3s.
I don't like the way GM has been bastardizing the Saab name lately (re-badged Imprezas and Trailblazers), but the 9-5 is still a good car in the bunch.
