Some of the early cars such as the two-strokers, V4s and Saab 99 were quite successful in rally sport, notably the 96 in the 1960s RAC Rally and Monte Carlo Rally, driven by Erik Carlsson.
Saab believes this is a safer position in case of an accident.
Originally Saabs also had the key located on the right side of the steering column, but when they changed from a column shifter to a floor shifter, the ignition key followed along, except in the Sonett III.

The 900 sedan was introduced in 1981 along with the phase-out of the old Saab B engine in favor of the lighter Saab H engine.
Saab introduced a turbocharger in 1978 in its 99 Turbo with a motor called the B engine (based on the Triumph Slant-4 engine designed for Saab by Triumph).
Saab used Bosch mechanical K-Jetronic Continuous Fuel Injection in the fuel injected and 8-valve turbocharged versions, and the Bosch LH 2.2 and 2.4 and Lucas Automotive electric fuel injection systems were used in the 16-valve versions.

The Saab 97 project as it was named was shown in the winter of '66 and production commenced with a tuned version of the 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine with 3 carburettors and producing 60 bhp.
It was essentially a Saab 99 with a new rear section that was identical to the new two-door Saab 900 that had appeared on the market just month earlier.
Saab had been planning a new model as long ago as 1974, but work did not get fully underway until 1979 and the collaboration with Fiat/Lancia in a project to produce a larger car.

At the New York Automobile Show of April 1958, Saab exhibited a car that they called the Gran Turismo 750 - a sporty and luxurious model that was pitched specifically at the growing US market.
The GT750 had twin carburettors and the engine had been tuned to develop 50hp.
The GT750 Super was relatively powerless at low engine revolutions, only coming to life at 3,400revs with the changing of gear at around 5,000revs for the best effect, not always easy with just three speeds to play with.

The 1960 model year 93 received the designation 93F, the F denoting new front hinged doors, a feature of the 93, the GT750 and later the 95.
The 93F represented the final year of production of the 93 and provided the opportunity to run down stocks of old components prior to the introduction of the, as yet unannounced, Saab 96.
Only 600 or so Saab 93F models were built, each with mudguards at the rear wheels and a larger capacity cooling system.

The SAAB 9-3 Viggen Pike\'s Peak Edition packs 750 horses in a little 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, pretty darned impressive if you ask me. Of course, I\'m a little biased on the subject.
Saab have admitted to have made fragile turbochargers and now claim to have fixed the problem.

The Halda Speedpilot was standard equipment on the Saab Granturismo 750, a performance version of the Saab 93 and 96 sedans built from 1958 thru 1962.
Notice in the sales brochure to the left that the Speedpilot is embedded in the dashboard just to the left of the glove box.
The Saab Service Manual of the period even included instructions on use and adjustment of the Speedpilot (click on diagrams below).
