This engine was available in the United States until the end of the Classic 900 but in most of Europe this engine was replaced a year later with the earlier B202 because of the unfavourable tax regulations in some European Countries for engines with a displacement of more than 2000 cc.
The H engine is very durable and due to fairly standardized engine management system, it can be easily tuned to 200 PS (197 hp/147 kW), and with further bolt-on modifications to a 250 PS (247 hp/184 kW) range.
Saab used Bosch mechanical K-Jetronic Continuous Fuel Injection in the fuel injected and 8-valve turbocharged versions, and the Bosch LH 2.2 and 2.4 and Lucas Automotive electric fuel injection systems were used in the 16-valve versions.

H engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An H engine (or H-block) is an engine configuration in which the cylinders are aligned so that if viewed from the front appear to be in a horizontal letter H.
The only obvious advantage of the H configuration is to allow the building of reasonably short engines with more than 12 cylinders, their compact size being useful as aircraft engines where their small size allows for better aerodynamics - see Lycoming.
Subaru produces water-cooled flat-4 and flat-6 "Horizontal" engines that are marketed as H-4 and H-6, despite the fact that their configuration has nothing to do with a real H engine.

In the broadest sense of the term, internal combustion engines can be said to have been invented in China, with the invention of fireworks during the Song dynasty, with some sources putting this invention a thousand years earlier still.
A V engine is a common configuration for an internal combustion engine in which the pistons are aligned so that, if viewed along the line of the crankshaft, they appear to be in a V. The V configuration reduces the overall engine length and weight compared to an equivalent straight engine.
Very narrow angles of V combine some of the advantages of the V engine and the straight engine (primarily in the form of compactness) as well as disadvantages; the concept is an old one pioneered by Lancia, but recently reworked by Volkswagen.

Saab have always been noted for advanced thinking in engineering terms, but here they have, perhaps, been particularly brave, They can claim to be the first manufacturer to use a turbo-charger in volume production, and there is no doubt that other manufacturers are looking very hard into the many advantages offered by the turbo-charger.
The internal combustion engine is, unfortunately, sadly lacking in efficiency large amounts of fuel being necessary to overcome frictional and thermal losses and turn the engine over before the remainder can power the car.
A full 17mg is used turning the engine, and by thermal and frictional losses, leaving 38 per cent to move the car.

When replacing both chains in the Saab 9000, the engine does not have to be removed, as in the late generation 900.
