Saab Sonett is the name of a series of automobiles from Saab.
In the 1950s Rolf Mellde suggested that Saab should make a small number of open-top two seater sport cars as racing regulations did not allow Saab to tune their cars as much as was needed to be competitive.
Two prototypes were developed, the Saab MFI13 by Malmö Flygindustri and the Saab Catherina by Sixten Sason.

The MFI 13 was a February 1965 prototype for the Saab 97, later known as Sonett II.
Both cars were brought to Trollhättan for examination and the MFI car was determined to be the most suitable for further development.
Both cars had the two stroke Saab Sport engine of 60 hp (45 kW) and were capable of 160 km/h.

It transpired that the MFI13 was a superior car to Sason's Catherina so it was chosen as the basis of the forthcoming Saab Sonett II.
The Sonett II was not identical to the MFI13 but the basic lines of the prototype have been retained.
The engine itself was the same as that in the Monte Carlo (the Monte Carlo was a Saab 96 based successor to the GT750), delivering 60hp due in no small respect to the three carburettors.

The Saab Catherina was a 1964 prototype automobile designed by Sixten Sason and made by the Aktiebolaget Svenska Järnvägsverkstäderna (the Swedish Railroad Works - ASJ) in Arlöv, commissioned by Saab.
Only one car was made although some of the design ideas later appeared in the Saab 99.
The car is on display in the SAAB museum in Trollhättan.
