Saab Toad, or Paddan in Swedish, was a development car Saab made in 1966 to test out the new chassis, drive train and engine for the Saab 99.
The Toad used the body of a Saab 96, which was long enough for the purpose but had to be widened by 20 cm.
Further development was carried out on the Saab 'daihatsu', a test car with the new body but badged 'daihatsu', to prevent its identification by journalists as a developmental Saab.

Early 99s carried over the freewheel transmission from the Saab 96, but the freewheel was removed with the introduction of the 1.9 L engine, possibly on account of the extra power that the apparatus would have to transmit.
The 99 was Saab's last rally car, first in EMS guise and later as the Turbo version.
The Saab 99 turbo was the first 'family car' to be fitted with a turbo; other contemporary turbocharged automobiles were very 'specialised' vehicles and were difficult to drive.

I think it could be the aerodynamics of the MH back with the toad that could lower the back draft (vacuum) effect.
They stated that the best thing I could do is to remove the rubber shield that I have at the rear bumper to deflect rocks and such from the toad.
I've seen this discussed before and the gist was the toad made up a deflector or spoiler or whatever and actually assisted the coach by changing drag or airflow or whatever.

Now, Volvo and SAAB are threatened with oblivion, supposedly because the new mother companies don't like it that they were better than their own offerings.
When people convert their cars to run on ethanol it is typically done by adding a pressure regulator to the fuel supply circuit in order to elevate the pressure from about 2.5 bar (36psi) to 4 bar (60 psi) and I have never heard anyone say that it made the connectors leak.
One of the reasons SAAB doesn't turn a profit is because keeping the Trollhattan plant open will continue to lose money for time to come.

The demand for such a car in the USA was clearly evident, and fellow Connecticut resident Ralph Millet, then President of Saab Motors here in the states, was fully behind Walter in his design proposal.
However, Saab executives in Sweden balked at the idea, asserting that Saab could develop its own sports car if needed, and as a result, the Swedish-designed Catherina, MFI 13, and ultimately Sonett came into being, while Walter's Quantums went into private hands back here in the states.

On the toad I now use (96tracker), I made two "u" shaped bars that attach directly to the front of the frame.
By the way with my set up it is easier to hook the chains on the toad before the tow bar is hooked up.

Erik - What you have to remember is that Saab were extrenely successful rallying the V4 with nothing more than 4.5J or 5J rims and skinny tyres, so there was never the demand for anything more extreme.
These really fill the arches out, are lighter than standard (but also softer!) and in Saab circles are a sign of a true afficionado...
i was once a member of the saab owners club, due to my grandfather (john henry) owning a 1978 99 GLE, which was absolutely gorgeous but has subsequently been passed in to a saabing friend who most people will know (iain hodcroft).
