 Saab Sonett II and III
The early Swedish-built Saab Sonnet II had a two-stroke (Ford V-4) engine -- meaning that instead of the modern four-stroke system of:
The Sonett I and early II's engine has only two strokes, which effectively combine steps 1 and 2 of a "normal" four-stroke process nearly simultaneously, and then does the same with steps 3 and 4.
The Saab Sonett III, has a slightly more conventional powerplant -- a V-4, front wheel drive engine -- which is to say, a totally alien engine.

The SAAB Story -- "A Resource for SAAB enthusiasts"
The Saab 93 was announced on August 18, 1955 in response to press speculation regarding the development of a three-cylinder, two-stroke engine, speculation that had been evident since DKW introduced their three-cylinder engine in March 1953.
Few further Sonett IIs were powered by the two-stroke power plant, instead the Sonett II was fitted with a new four-stroke four-cylinder unit (Ford V4) as was now standard in the Saab 96.
The Saab 93 748cc three-cylinder two-stroke was tuned to develop 57.5hp through a three-speed gearbox mounted forward of the engine.

Car of the Month Archive - April 2004
During 1967 the 2-stroke engine in the Sonett II was replaced by the Ford V4 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine which also replaced the 2-stroke engine of the 96 saloon.
Since it outclassed the prototype Saab was working on, Saab adopted this design and reworked it into the model 97 which was presented in 1966 as the Sonett II.
There were plans for a turbo-charged successor to the Sonett III, a 2+2 this time, but these were abandoned because of Saab's limited financial resources and Saab has concentrated on saloon cars ever since.

Although Saab engineers liked the two stroke engine it was decided that a four stroke engine was necessary and the choice was a 1.5 L (later 1.7 and 1.9 L) engine from Triumph, the same Triumph Slant-4 engine used in the Triumph Dolomite, but with a Zenith-Stromberg CD carburetor developed specially for Saab.
The Saab 99 turbo was the first 'family car' to be fitted with a turbo; other contemporary turbocharged automobiles were very 'specialised' vehicles and were difficult to drive.
