 SableFacts
Wherever the Saanen white gene appears, that gene is dominant and the offspring will be white, so to perpetuate the Sables, they need to be kept separate from the white animals and bred only to each other.
The number of Sables born to purebred Saanens is falling simply because the number of purebred Saanens is falling markedly, a fact which has many Saanen breeders very worried and is all the more reason that the genetics embodied in the Sables should not be lost.
Sables are generally bred to Sables or at least to a Saanen which is known to carry the recessive colored gene that produces the Sable colors, not with the view in mind of producing American Saanens, but with the goal of producing the colored animals they love.

The great Saanen temperament proved itself as Jenifer just stood there calmly chewing her cud when a missed step could have spelled disaster for both of them.

Sables are colored Saanens and have had an ADGA board approved breed standard since 1981, have registration records dating back to the imports and were previously registered as Saanens before the Saanen breed standard changed to disallow any color but white or light cream.
When the original Saanens were imported from the Eastern Hemisphere, some of them were colored animals and this is well documented in the ADGA History and by Allen Rogers in his book "Saanen Roots".
If offspring of two Saanens meet all other breed standards of Saanens other than color, they DO meet the Sable breed standard and that is the only place they would be qualified to go.
