[10th February 2006 - 02.:00 S..L.T] The ruling party of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council today rejected debating a special proposal brought up by the JVP to halt appointments of subject directors and acting principals made by chief minister of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council as the Minister of Education against the accepted policy of appointments.
Kamal Nandasena, JVP Member of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, said they brought up the relevant proposal as the chief minister had repeatedly refused to call a meeting of the education advisory board.
And by bringing up the proposal they were able to inform the whole country about the malpractices carried out by the chief minister.

When the changes in the nine provinces are compared 1990 vis a vis 1997, the efficiency has increased in all the provinces except in the Eastern province where a decrease is seen from 89.8 percent to 79.9 percent.
The increase in the Central province from 83.5 percent to 90.2 percent, and in the Uva province from 82.5 percent to 87.1 percent and in Sabaragamuwa from 85.9 percent to 90.0 percent are noteworthy.
Sabaragamuwa Province which had the lowest mean value in 1994, has shown a considerable improvement in 1999.

Although this province has the highest population density and is the most urbanised, it also has the best health facilities both in quality and quantity.
The Central province had the highest prevalence of stunting 33% but the highest prevalence of underweight (39%) and wasting (21%) were observed in the Sabaragamuwa province.

Sabaragamuwa PC Maheepala Herath will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province before governor C.N. Saliya W. Mathew at the governor's office in Ratnapura New Town today, July 16 at 9.30 a.m.
Herath resigned from his Parliamentary seat and the Deputy Minister's post, to contest the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council election from the Kegalle district as the Freedom Alliance Chief Ministerial candidate.
He was elected with 84,486 preferential votes, which is the highest number of preferences polled by any candidate in the Sabaragamuwa province.

Experienced T.F. Alailima of Western Province set up a new Games record in winning the Men's Discus throw registering a distance of 51.59 which was first believed to be a Sri Lanka record, but was proved otherwise later.
The official booklet had given the Sri Lanka record as 50.48 metres but it later transpired that Alailima had made a throw of 51.61 at the recently concluded Asian Athletic Championships in Colombo but this was not highlighted as he finished last in the event.
Western Province and North Western Province entered the finals of the Netball tournament with semi final victories over Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces while Central Province clinched the third place in the play off.
