Sabarmati Ashram formerly known as Satyagraha Ashram, was witness to many historical events that shook up the British Empire.
Set up in 1915, the Ashram was also a perfect example of a model community based on rules and values.
It is situated about 5 km from the center of Ahmedabad, (Gujarat State), on the west bank of Sabarmati river.

 Sabarmati River in Gujarat
The Sabarmati, one of the biggest rivers of north Gujarat, originates from the Dhebar lake in Rajasthan and flows towards the Gulf of Cambay.
The three "virgin" rivers of the north and the Sabarmati with its tributaries are the daughters of the Aravalli ranges, while the Mahi and the Narmada with their families originate from Madhya Pradesh, the former in the big lake near Amzara and the latter in the Amarkantak.

The Sabarmati Express would not have met with the fatal accident had the signal maintainer or the pointsman at 'B' cabin informed the station superintendent at Samlaya that the automatic signalling system had failed.
In circumstances where the automatic signalling system fails, the driver is asked to slow the train to a minimum speed and the signal maintainer clears the train from that malfunctioning zone by walking in front of the engine with a green flag, a procedure which was not followed, say railway officials.
The Sabarmati was expected on the main track but it came on the loop track, the result of which was the fatal accident.

In wake of UC Bannerjee report which found that the kar-sevaks armed with trishul's burned themselves alive in S-6 coach of the Sabarmati express in Godhra.I am opening this thread to collect information from various sources to establish the facts.The findings can perhaps later be published as a rebuttal to Mr Bannerjee's great work.

The mishap occurred when the Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express train coming from Varanasi and a goods train collided near Samaliya village, which occurred at around 03:30 hrs (IST) Railway Superintendent of Police S P Gehlot told sources.
As a result of the accident, the engine and four coaches of the Sabarmati Express train derailed, he said.
