George Biddell Airy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In June 1835 Airy was appointed Astronomer Royal in succession to John Pond, and began his long career at the national observatory which constitutes his chief title to fame.
The condition of the observatory at the time of his appointment was such that Lord Auckland, the first lord of the Admiralty, considered that "it ought to be cleared out," while Airy admitted that "it was in a queer state." With his usual energy he set to work at once to reorganize the whole management.
He remodelled the volumes of observations, put the library on a proper footing, mounted the new (Sheepshanks) equatorial and organized a new magnetic observatory.

Louisiana is a southern state of the United States of America.
The U.S. divided the newly acquired land into two territories: the Orleans Territory (which became the state of Louisiana in 1812) and the District of Louisiana (which consisted of all the land not included in Orleans Territory).
As some portion of the population had Union sympathies, unusually the portions of Lousiana under Federal control were recognized as a state within the Union and elected representatives who were sent to the congress in Washington, D.C through the rest of the war.

Florien Freestate Festival - Sabine Parish Louisiana
The Sabine Free State Festival celebrates the period in Western Louisiana's history when, in 1806, this region was declared a "neutral ground" pending settlement of a dispute between Spain and the U. as to the location of the western boundary of the Louisiana Purchase.
The Sabine Neutral Strip Historical Foundation and the Sabine Freestate Festival were organized to commemorate the great historical events leading to the establishment and termination of the "neutral ground" between the territory of the United States and the territory of his Catholic Majesty (Spain) west of the Mississippi River.
The greatest concern of the United States at this time was not the precise location of the western boundary of this territory but was the French possession of New Orleans by which they could control the Mississippi River and the Gulf.

Transmission in the population of the Free State is low, possibly due to the success of the DOTS programme and the absence of the Beijing family of strains.
On the basis of a literature study and the initial examination of empirical material gathered in three high-burden areas of the Free State, they came to the conclusion that a broad conceptualisation of deprivation, and not a standard measurement of poverty, is pivotal in explaining noncompliance with DOTS.
The study was conducted at nine clinics in the Free State province (South Africa) in three high-burden (rural and urban) areas.
