 The Romance of Sabine Lake
In the geology of the Gulf Prairie, Sabine Lake is one of a number of tidal lagoons, others being Calcasieu and Grand Lakes in Louisiana and Galveston and Lavaca Bays in Texas.
Joseph C. Dyer of Lake Charles and Capt. Jean Berlandier together discovered that the language spoken by the Orcoquisas near Anahuac and the Attakapas warriors of the Calcasieu River was one and the same language.
While the whitecaps of Sabine Lake are perhaps more docile with their murmurs today, they are still occasionally churned up by gale force winds, and a lot of the romance remains.

It is an equally ironic fact that many of the "slaves" brought to Sabine Lake in 1836-1837 were actually kidnaped British freedmen from Barbados or were indentured servants of five years tenure.
He conducted a brisk trade with the Louisiana sugar and cotton planters, who came to the Sabine River to buy the slaves of their choice, and as late as 1836, William F. Gray reported in his diary that Lafitte's old slave barracks on the Sabine were still standing, although abandoned.
One result of the charges of a renewed slave trade in Sabine Lake was the establishment of a United States customhouse on Sabine Lake on Green's Bayou.

Three winter trap closures (Sabine Lake, Terrebonne Bay estuary, and Breton Sound estuary) and one spring closure (Vermilion Bay/West Cote Blanche Bay) are planned for 2005.
During the Sabine Lake closure, the use of crab traps will be prohibited for a 10-day period from 6:00 a.m., February 18, 2005 through 6:00 a.m.
